Lift ring for reverse sticking 6 speed and reverse Dispatch

Post by walbeck »

Going into revers is fine but you have to remember to push lift-ring down for forward gears, presumable it should return its self once it passes through neutral? I've tried lubricating it no luck, its definitely just the ring its self as disconnecting the cable makes no difference ie it still sticks in the up position How do you remove gear knob?

Which cable have you disconnected ?
What have you tried to lubricate , gear box or gear stick linkage ?
Vehicle Vin would help to narrow down the variants

Quote from Admiral "Which cable have you disconnected ?"

The cable that's attached to the ring, only lubricated the lift ring itself. The lift ring is a separate part to the rest of the gear linkage, presumably it just operates a gate to prevent selecting reverse unless its operated. The lift ring is free to return for about half its travel only sticking when pulled up to around its maximum travel, this true with or without the cable attached, which makes me think its just the knob itself causing my problem. There must be a spring within the knob as well one on the gate end of the cable. Sorry this reply is rather wordy but hopefully its clearer?

Ok, so now we know what you have:

DISPATCH III LONG PANEL VAN H1 TYPE 12 2.0 HDi 130 FAP (DW10CD) Manual gearbox 6
dispatch gear controls.PNG
The above is the parts diagram for your gearbox controls. As you can see item (7) - the sleeve is available separately. But this may help explain things better.

Not for me just that the Vin will give Admins the chance to post specific details/diagrams of your vehicle when it left the factory and it helps other members to add input :-D

Thanks for that Mark
Do you have any more detail how to remove the item 1 (knob) Presumably Item 7 (Lift-Ring) would then slide off.

I do but I have to go out now - so will post later / morning as it is part of a larger procedure that I'll have to check up on.

No need to excuse anything, we are all here to help each other, just that some have more access than others, they are called Admins or as we like to call them Gods :)

And i was at fault for not explaining the Vin would be masked to everyone but Admins so just asked the good lady to give me a kick, off to A&E :rofl2:

As promised. This is the procedure for removing the gearbox controls - but includes the reverse gear control device:

Recommended Tools:
disp gear 1.PNG
Ball Joint Extractor
  • Put the vehicle on a hoist.
  • Place the gear lever in neutral.
  • Remove the front right-hand wheel.
disp gear 2.PNG
disp gear 3.PNG
Remove:
  • The fixing (1)
  • The reverse gear device (2)
Uncouple the ball-joints (3) using ball joint extractor tool.
Release the sleeve stops from their support:
  • Push the locking keys (4) (In the direction of the arrow )
  • Detach the sleeve stop from its support (pull upwards)
Raise the vehicle.
Unclip the gear control cables retaining spacer on the body floor and push it towards the passenger compartment.
Return the vehicle to its wheels.
Passenger Compartment

Remove the central console
disp gear 4.PNG
Uncouple the ball-joints (5) using a flat spanner.
Unlock: The cable stops (6):
  • Press on the 2 tabs simultaneously (in direction "a")
  • Pull the sleeve stop (6) towards the outside
Remove:
  • The cable (7) from the reverse gear device (2)
  • The gear control cables
  • The 3 nuts (8)
  • The selection lever (9)

Marc sorry I typed in the wrong item number for the knob which i want to remove it should have been item 3 on the parts list you posted, I think the lift-ring 7 would then simply slide off, anyway that's what I'm hoping will happen There is a plate on the top of the knob which might conceal a fixing but I cant see any fixings on it? The plate looks as if its metal and has gear positions marked on it. I have seen other posts saying the Knob is removed by a anti-clockwise 1/4 turn but mine wont budge, don't want to cause any damage as the post didn't mention my model specifically

The gear level knob (3) just pulls off - but be warned - don't make the mistake many do and put your face over the gear stick as you try and pull it off - as they are extremely tight and when they come off you are likely to lose a few teeth - no kidding. Keep your face away and apply straight up pressure - there is no twist lock mentioned anywhere and my 6 speed box leather knob which I replaced came off straight away - it just pushes on and off.

Obviously the reverse gear lift off mechanism is covered in the procedure I posted, but the cable to it needs removing first.

Thanks for that Marc I'm duly warned. I'm wondering if the previous owner may have blinged it up with an after market knob or perhaps it came loose and used to much glue in an attempt to fix it

They are very tight and it can leave you wondering if they have been glued on, but a gentle wiggling and firm upward pull will get it off.
