XUD 9 oil leak

Post by boxerbean »

She's a squirter!

Weeping oil in the area behind the fuel pump, cleaned it off for a better look, here's the pic I took after a couple of minutes idling.

Any suggestions of possible cause/remedy appreciated.

Thanks.

There is an oil gallery right by there so it could be a failure of the head gasket causing it... It's not common but I have seen it once before...

Just before you condemn the gasket though, slip off the cambelt covers and check the camshaft oil seal is good and the oil is not coming from these and creeping down and exiting where you see it...

IIRC, there's an O-ring sitting in the head gasket, right in that corner. It's the high-pressure oilway that takes oil to the camshaft and valvegear. As the HG ages, the O-ring can bake hard and go leaky.

Overheating of the cylinder head doesn't help, which is why coolant level and thorough bleeding are important, to eliminate air pockets (=hotspots) in the head.

If removing the head, get it checked for flatness before refitting.

Urgh, I have a feeling the guys who fitted the engine overheated it - would explain my leaking heater matrix. Better have another cuppa before I go and have a look under the cam cover.

the structure of the vehicle itself to the left of the second (Overview) pic looks somewhat less than pretty. Just a mention to make sure the van's structurally sound before potentially chucking loads of money at it.

Head gasket, almost certainly 😣
Leak from there was the end of my first Xantia TD.

Just removed the cambelt cover, camshaft oil seal is fine. looks like the head gasket. :(

Keen amateur, thanks for pointing that out, it's the van in my profile pic, I've been working my way around the numerous faults and on a bit of a learning curve to say the least - even old campers go for daft money so I'm sorta stuck with it.

If anyone lives near Brampton and likes swearing you're welcome to come and fix the head for me!

It's not such a bad job... hardest bit is that access to the inlet manifold bolts is nigh on impossible (or at least it is on an engine set up for overhead intercooler) - and this means removing the head complete with the turbo - which is very heavy. I did it on my own on a BX TD, but I would either use 2 people or preferably a hoist of some sort if I was doing it again. If you're not in any rush 2 or 3 evenings to lift the head, a light skim, 2 or 3 evenings to put it back together.

I'm going to have a go at it, thought there might be a thread on here of someone doing one so I could just join the dots.

Just a note that you'd be well advised to use new head bolts on reassembly, not essential according to the BoL but with White's engine I got a set of Elring ones for £20 and it seemed rude not to at that price... Also used an Elring steel head gasket that was £14 since it's a known good brand & does away with any silicone/Viton O-rings too. (make sure to either fit a gasket with the same number of notches as original, or better still measure piston protrusion to ascertain the thickness needed).

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Struggling to remove this, thermostat housing?

Removed 2 6mm Allen bolts it rocks but won't pull out, is it a case of pull harder or am I missing something?
