Photo ABS sensor, reluctor ring how fit?

Unread post by captainkephart »

Hi, Happy New Year!

How do you fit the ring?
My Haynes manual (for Xsara 1.6 DOHC petrol) says nothing about them being separate so I thought they were part of the axle casting, seems not ...

Are they screwed on, interference fit, put on hot and shrunk on? What keeps them in place?

Mine seem distorted (by rust underneath?), if I clean off the rust will they then be too big to stay on?
I'm mystified ...

As to getting at them, I assume this advice from Richard W applies:
viewtopic.php?p=625986#p625986

Does that mean that it's best to replace the hub bearings while you are at it?

Any help appreciated.

The way I (with a lot of help from CitroJim) fitted reluctor rings on my last Xantia was to pop them in the oven at 150C for half an hour or so, remove the old ones and cleaned the surfaces underneath, and then quickly popped the new ones on.

Don't rely on other posts that relate to different vehicles - that procedure was for a C4 Picasso not a Xsara Picasso.

Your vehicle doesn't have ESP, just ABS, so apart from anything else it will have a different number of teeth on the toothed ring.

You have the Bosch ABS 5.3 system, so the toothed wheels have 29 teeth, not the 48 teeth on ESP models. The toothed wheel is integral with the driveshaft stub axle bowl for the front wheels and mounted on the hub/bearing for the rear wheels.

Hi Marc,

Thanks for the quick clarification.

So, if "The toothed wheel is integral with the driveshaft stub axle bowl for the front wheels" then the stub axle bowl has to be replaced, yes? Meaning dismantling the whole hub / driveshaft / CV joint to replace the part with the ring on it... ?

Meaning lots of fun on a cold driveway ... or waiting for the spring weather!

The ABS randomly cutting in sometimes when braking at low speeds can be ignored for the moment I hope ... ?

Hi
The cv joint was cleaned up where the reluctor ring will fit of rust.
The front reluctor ring was fitted cold. It is an interference fit and was tapped on with a small hammer, then later I used a brass dolly to drive it home, only light taps was used.
This video shows the start of the process of removing the cv joint.

Video Reluctor ring being fitted to BMW the same process I did.

Hi Moc,

Thanks very much for the extra information and videos.

Marc says that the old 2009 Xsara Picasso I have doesn't have a removable ring ... it's a whole hub job :?

Bother, that £4.95 replacement looked so attractive!

Officially, Citroen certainly don't supply the ring as a separate part - and consequently there are no removal and refitting procedures for it. You can probably obtain one from elsewhere and fit one yourself though.

But, here, as you can see where I've marked in red, you can just see the ring:

Hi Marc,

Apologies for slow reply ...
Thanks for the diagram. Helps a great deal.

I will have a go at this now the weather is a bit better (for the moment anyway).

Best wishes, Can K

PS: Slow reply as I've been busy with this Royal Enfield 250cc motorcycle.
Looks good, but most of the bolts not fully tight, has required work to check them all ... just in case!
