3008 Diesel. No start. Battery Issue

Post by GF1969 »

Good morning. Hope this finds you all well?
Following on from my issues last summer which some of you may remember, after months of trouble free motoring in the 3008 diesel semi auto, the good lady called me the other day to say car wont start.
Battery is not a year old but it throws up similar lights and alarms to the last battery change apart from a few things.
Last time the park brake wouldn't go on. In the end I tracec a blown fuse under the battery tray, a battery reset and clearance of the codes fixed it.
I did have one glitch a month later when I went to use it to jump start a car and it threw a wobbly and I had to reset the battery again.
This time I'm getting all the lights on the dash and its showing economy mode.
First call was battery reset but this has brought up the first new issue. The electric windows won't work.
I've plugged it into diagbox. It recognises the VIN but then it says no dialogue with the vci. It won't communicate with any of the systems.
What should I try next please?
Despite the car being a 12 plate it's only done 33.5k so still has lots of life in it. I'm not ready to get rid ..... yet!!
VIN is VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

Thanks in advance

When you changed the battery, I hope you replaced it with a L3-70AH-760A-AGM battery as this is what is required.
You have Stop & Start which uses an Ultra Capacitor & Converter. These are highly sensitive devices and can easily be damaged as a result of jump starting another vehicle if not careful.

From those initial codes, they mostly seem electrical communication faults on the CAN network which means there is no communication. The pre-heating codes can be ignored asn they relate to the glow plugs and are not really needed to start the car. So you definitely have an electrical problem that needs investigation. But do confirm you have an AGM battery and of the correct capacity, as these are designed to be able to cope with the frequent starting cycles of a Stop Start system.

Then next thing I would do is test the battery and ensure it is being charged properly. You also have a reversible alternator on this vehicle and a separate starter system. So I would also get the alternator checked too.

You have a diagnostic software version that is far above the requirements needed for your 2012 car. Version 9.* is really only needed for vehicles from 2016 onwards. Version 7.58 would have been fine for this year.

P0500 is related to the vehicle speed value not being received from the ESP ECU to the engine ECU - which is fine if the car is stationary.
U1313 is again related to the ESP System communication fault and this can affect the following: Engine hesitating, cutting out, Lack of power, Starting problem, Absence of automatic stopping of the internal combustion engine, Deactivation/cut-off of the cruise control or speed limiter, Activation of the cruise control or speed limiter function impossible, Grinding / Squealing / Grating, Malfunctioning of the engine when idling, Malfunction of the Stop and Start switch or its LED, Banging/knocking/creaking, Problem with automatic restarting of the internal combustion engine.

So it really needs further investigation with so many communications faults. I hope there was no damage after you jump started another vehicle previously.

Thanks for your reply.
To clarify.
The new battery fitted a year ago was indeed correct for stop start. It has been fine until now.
I use my version of diag regularly on this vehicle without issue so fine there also.
It was July last year when I used the car to jump start another. It has been fine since.

However...
Whilst doing some tests it did indeed come up with low battery which would explain a lot of things. So I agree your suspicion it is battery related are probably correct.
Hooking up another car to it resulted in the windows starting to work.
I now have the battery charging and will report back later. My first port of call will be a battery reset especially as the windows are now operating!
As my wife's car it covers little mileage. She doesn't work so uses it for short journeys to the shop and to visit her elderly mother. With such short journeys using lights and wipers not giving the battery chance to fully recharge, along with the cold weather indicates the battery has just got too low. Again I shall report back if this proves to be the case. Annoyingly I have lent my.multimeter out and travel restrictions prevent me going to collect it otherwise proving the point would be.much easier!
Going forward I may use it for work the odd day a week as I commute 40 miles each way. That would give it plenty of time to replenish the battery and give it change to regen the dpf too.
Of course it could just be the battery is faulty in which case I'll get it replaced under warranty. We shall see.

Yes sounds like a plan - you'll find most electrical issues are down to a low battery - especially during lockdown and winter. Most electrical system ECUs require a minimum voltage to operate and the battery will slowly drain on standby.

Bear in mind that after you have charged the battery up, the BCSU (Battery Charge Status Unit) generally needs an overnight period of the car not being operated, doors opened or anything else for it to properly calibrate and determine battery health status and charge, as it uses this information to determine the energy management strategy.

Ok. So latest installment.
My battery charger is ancient so bought a smart charger for AGM Stop Start batteries and left it to do its thing.
Next morning its showing the battery fully charged at 12.6V. It doesn't seem enough to me.
Put it on car, do the reset process. Twice. Doesnt start.
Hook up diagbox.
Get communication errors as per pictures.
Take it all out and check main fuses behind the ecu. All good.
Put back on. Do battery reset. No comms again as per pics. At one point the Network Isolation Control Unit was communicating.
Check battery and it's only giving 12.3v
Am I right to be starting to think this battery is faulty? It's only a year old so I can dig out the receipt for a warranty claim.

Won't start as in won't crank, or doesn't fire when cranking?

RichardW. It won't crank due to faults shown.
Says gearbox in m- and engine repair needed.

Are you getting neutral when you select it? If it doesn't 'see' neutral then it will not attempt a start. Not seeing the ECUs is quite normal when it's in economy mode, as they are all switched off - Wheeler alluded to being able to switch the BSI out of economy mode for fault finding, but I don't know how to do it! Does the gear box actuator whine at key on? Are there any obvious signs of distress on it (like all the oil being on the floor!!)

It's already in neutral when it says m-
Moving the selector does nothing.
I can turn economy mode off for (I think) 30 mins via the bsi menu on diagbox.
No oil leaks.
As above im sure it is battery related. I just need someone more knowledgeable to check the data I've come up with to confirm.
I have a new battery waiting to.fit but I'd like it confirmed while I can still return it!

Well I'm at a loss now.
New battery fitted. Reset.
Everything is the bloody same!
What in earth do I try now? I'm outside my knowledge here now!
