Hi, unfortunately had what looks to be a crown and pinion failure resulting in a smashed gearbox case on my 2007 c4 hatchback 1.6 hdi vtr with egs gearbox. I've dropped the gearbox and looking for replacements from breakers I can find many for the grand picasso but none listed for the hatchback. My question is whether they are the same unit? After much research I've been unable to come to a conclusive answer.
Many thanks

Re: C4 semi auto gearbox
Hi and welcome - the reason you probably had inconclusive findings, is because there are variations to these.
Essentially they are a manual box and separate clutch, with all the electro hydraulic piloting mechanisms doing all the work. These vary with the engine type fitted and model.
The only thing I can offer is to look up the various parts for your C4 from your VIN and provide you with the PSA part numbers. This may aid in your search. In order to provide you with the latest parts information, you would need to make a min. £10 donation to the forum though, as access to the live data is chargeable now from March. This would cover you for up to 2 years though if you had any other parts queries.

Re: C4 semi auto gearbox
Thanks very much for your reply. I've made a donation to the group. As far as I have been able to work out so far all the gearboxes for the 1.6 hdi dv6 ted4 semi auto engine are of the 20ds type but from then on they have differing suffix numbers so for example mine is a 20ds21but I see several differing suffix numbers and sometimes for what seems the exact same year and model as mine. I don't know if anyone knows the relevence of this?
Also, if I can establish that there are matching cases, internals, ratios etc, across the range and it is differences in the accuators/ecu that are particular to model that, as i intend to refit the original accuator/ecu I would be OK with that?
With thanks

Hi Duncan, leave it with me - we've been watching "A Bridge Too Far" tonight and time has flown. I'll see what I have as soon as for you. Thanks for the donation too.

Re: C4 semi auto gearbox
Ok, so the Gearbox for your C4 is a CP 19X71. CP 19X71 relates to the final drive ratio.
It will have one of the following markings, and you have already said yours is a DS21.
DS25 DS81 DS44 DS17 DS01 DS31 DS66 DS35 DS07 (DSDD) DS11 DS21 DS60 DS49 DS06
The PSA part number for the new gearbox was 2231A8. This has since been superseded with replacement part number: 1606977980.
The part number for an exchange box was: 2223ZJ. Again, use the same marking.
Hopefully the PSA part numbers I quoted above will help you find a suitable replacement.
I think the variations in the markings may be linked to the different stepping of the gearbox.

Re: C4 semi auto gearbox
Thats great, thanks Marc. So from what I can see a gearbox from a picasso is not going to be suitable as they all have differing DS numbers/drive ratio - will continue to search through the breakers for a hatchback one. Thanks again and indeed a great movie!

Re: C4 semi auto gearbox
No problems - if you Google 'Citroen 2231A8' you should find quite a few available - though not cheap.
A few here, but make sure to check the details:
https://www.autoparts24.co.uk/citroen-c ... gearbox/1/
Just for your information, an exchange box from Citroen will cost £1929.85 + VAT (£2315.82) with a surcharge of course. £7952.51 inclusive for a new one!
