Well, in truth I've not had need of one yet either!
I thought it'd be useful if I needed to confirm the flatness of.. something. I'm not sure what, had in mind if I unbolted something flanged I could confirm it wasn't warped or distorted.

Likewise if I weld something up, being able to check if the heat had affected it would be useful too.

I will probably look out for some cheap second hand scribing gauges e.g. https://ebay.us/m/9FqVDA
Then I could teach myself how to make best use of such things!
Many years ago I did have a go. That was a "proper" surface - huge, and sprung!
But that's almost 3 decades ago - so I'm a bit rusty! :-D

Bought myself an Eclipse No. 101, second hand, £11.87
https://ebay.us/m/mPSzT4

Blue 308 fill up:
496 miles covered.
179.9 is the "cheapest" local diesel according to Petrol Prices app, Morrisons at Leigh.
£69.82 @ 179.9 ppl: 38.81 litres= 8.55 gallons.

58 MPG :)

Quite surprising how much variation there is, local to me the "within 3 mile radius" the diesel price range quoted is 182.6 to 192.9 ppl.

The "cheap" 179.9 was closer to where I work and the bright lights of Warrington. The same 3 mile radius gives a range of 184.9 to 189.9 for local to the office today.

Leigh Morrisons is roughly on the way home, so wasn't too much out the way.

I do recommend the petrol prices app. It has been a bit slow at times (I think due to high usage) but it's free and helps a little. :)

+1 for the PetrolPrices app - I use it but it presents me with a dilemma. Do I buy the Texaco diesel at 185.9p/litre, or do I buy the Esso diesel at 187.9p/litre but cash in some Nectar points to bring that down to 182.9p. The trouble with cashing in the Nectar points is the value of the Nectar points cashed in isn't worth the 3p/litre saving...... but the idea of buying the least expensive local diesel appeals :? :-k :-D

That surface plate and scribing gauge are good buys Matt :D Likely not something you'll use every day but when needed, invaluable.

A bit like my lathe, pillar drill and hydraulic press... Be lost without those....

Apropos fuel prices, Tesco remains good for me and I get Clubcard points. I'm just happy that fuel remains very readily available despite all the current shenanigans going on. Price, given my very limited mileage these days, is secondary.

I dread the thought of panic buying and having to queue up for the stuff. My local Tesco filling station at 6AM remains happily a very peaceful place. As does the Tesco itself for the other sort of fuel I need...

I'm pleased you've got a quiet Tesco, Jim - I thought that was an oxymoron as the nearby Extra seems perpetually busy! To the extent I don't like going to Tesco and joining the rush.

I do fill up there when they are competitive but last time I went the receipt said "points this visit: 0" - do you definitely still get Clubcard points on fuel Jim?

There's a Sainsbury's that we also don't routinely shop at, that sometimes gets a fuel visit and a few Nectar points accumulated. Forgot you could get Nectar points at Esso too. Wonder how many Nectar points I've got: can't recall spending any!

Morrisons gives "More" card points in fuel. I've got their app and on shopping there infrequently most of the offers don't compute for us - I'm likely to buy £9 worth of shampoo, so miss out on accumulating a bonus of points for doing so :rofl2:
They are uncompetitive on fuel at our local store too, do won't be there for the foreseeable.

============

Surface plate: check
Pillar drill: check
Lathe: check
Press: not yet, but I do keep eyeing them up when I spot cheap 2nd hand ones on Marketplace/eBay/etc. not an immediate need and running out of room! Must make a better effort at getting the firewood burnt and gaining some room (next winter, obviously!)

Tesco: Hmmm, not sure why I had "points: 0" - it would have been a fill up so 30+ litres

1 point per 2 litres apparently:
https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/ ... rd-points/

Incidentally it seems you can build Tesco clubcard points at Esso too:
https://www.esso.co.uk/en-gb/loyalty-program-tesco
One point per £3 spend.

Or you can have Nectar points at Esso too!
https://www.nectar.com/esso
1 point per litre

Morrisons is 5 points per litre
https://www.morrisons.com/help/morrison ... s--fivers/

Head boggling! :eh:

Or just have points cards for everywhere and juggle them before paying! :juggle:

I run both cars exclusively on Shell VPower so accumulate Shell points as I go. I had a balance over 5000 so the attendant suggested I used some a couple of months ago. I redeemed just over 3000 for a tank of fuel in the MX3, usually around £56!! No idea what value that is but I just play the game

Recently I've been laid up so the fuel increase hasn't bothered me at all!! :-D
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

Back in the day when I was doing a lot of driving and always filling at Sainsbury's I accumulated enough points to do my Christmas shopping and still have some left.

Only collected points twice recently, once last September and again six weeks ago.
I did try to redeem some in January but couldn't as I had to have a bloody 'app' on my phone to do it

I used to use the asda fuel on and off more of then on, till last year when a bad top up upset the 308cc , once all sorted I used another outlet all has been ok since , the price ranges are just a ripp off last month while at a forecourt linked up with m&s while being served then the chap on the till grabbed his phone as it received a text message, he then looked at me and said wow your lucky you paid that just then as ive been told to put the fuel prices up 12p per litre... me and the wife walked back to the car with our pasta bowl lunches and decafe drinks then my wife said is that how its done then I said I dont have a clue .

During the text message did the petrol station have a delivery ? We have driven passed our local Shell garage at Waitrose and on the way back the price has gone up so not kept until the end of the day. I have not seen it go down whilst we have been out.
