Did you just try followers first :?:

We’re you down on compression as well :?:
I did....I thought I had got away with it.

I did not check as it ran well....until it started chuffing back out of the inlet manifold. :(

Can you do that on that engine without removing the head Jim ? (I could on the 2.1)

Looks like you can on the 2.0 HDi Alasdair rather than take the cylinder head off, just strip down to the camshaft.

Also looks like you can leave the camshaft in place and take the cylinder head off complete so quite a flexible design.

Cheers Jim but I'm going to wait for my endoscope to arrive as I fear more damage with the missing compression ....

Just a note: I could not tell the stems were bent until I removed the head completely and had stripped the springs etc ....not saying that is always the case, just my inbuilt bad luck :)

As vales rotate the very slight bend would have worn the stems over time causing wobble/oil use etc so I should be glad that they were out of true enough to show I suppose :)

I'd be tempted to just try the follower first but that largely depends on your attitude to risk. Far simpler and so what if it goes again? Then do a full strip.

Maybe the broken piece somehow wedged the valve spring. Depends on how it was sitting when you found it.

You don't even have to put the cam cover on. You could swap the follower out and do a compression test! :-D

If good -

If not -

Once I stick the camera down a decision will be made, all the timing gear is off already ….

Ahem, I may be late to the party but was my guess not the exact part we see failed? :rofl2: *dodges potential return bunfire*

Not that this is necessarily the whole issue, but still strange to only see one follower failed. Low compression would result from the piston effectively attempting the "suck" part of "suck squeeze bang blow" through a closed intake valve, and fuel would still be in the chamber since it's a direct injection engine (even if it was an IDI diesel the injectors are "downstream" of the valves, in the pre-chamber).

I'd honestly give this a fair shot at being a simple rocker failure at this point, has to be worth a shot replacing it and seeing if compression returns?

Edit- having read page 11 now, nothing wrong with borescoping it but if the valve is only minutely bent it's liable to be invisible to the eye. Even if there is a witness mark suggesting it's contacted the piston I'd still risk just doing a rocker and see if it lives.

ekjdm14 You make some valid points there, but I'm still going to wait and see what a camera shows ...

I know I'm a right tease aren't I

No idea if this is possible, never played with PSA engines that deep (only Kwaks), can you remove the cams which will close all valves then use compressed air, (tyre?) into the cylinder to see if it leaks?
