Steering Rack replacement

Unread post by Myles97 »

Had an issue where car didn't drive straight after many alignments.

Replaced the rack and tracking adjusted so now drives straight, issue is now esp is on. Read the codes and are attached below.. did a calibration on the steering angle sensor and the live data shows it's working but still displays as faulty and esp remains.

The replacement rack was from 2009 model 1.6d and put on a 2015 model. So not sure that would matter too much.

Any suggestions please. DS3 1.6hdi 2015

Presumably the rack needs to be programmed to the car; there's also a good chance a 2009 rack is not compatible with a 2015 car....

See below on service we can provide for checking part numbers etc:

We can help if you need an original genuine part number, part diagram or vehicle factory build sheet and can't already find the info you need on the Forum. For this service, we do ask for a membership upgrade for official parts data as we are in turn charged for this. It will cover you for future part number requests for up to 3 years *, so excellent value.

We do NOT provide Technical Documentation or Wiring Diagrams as part of this Service! We may only help with these if Staff already have them.

* Please note that the FCF can only provide this service to donating members for as long as the Stellantis Group provide access to us.

If interested, links are below, then provide your vehicle's VIN in full, which will be masked automatically when you submit your post.

It depends on your Diagnostic tool's capabilities. We don't provide that sort of help - it's generally a dealer job unless you know what you're doing and have the capable diagnostic tools and that the ECU is not locked into secure mode requiring PSA server account and access. The correct part is essential as if electric power steering, it must be correctly programmed for the specific vehicle as there are electrical and assistance properties that must be correct for the vehicle.
Please note, I'm no longer active on the Forum, so won't respond to messages.

I changed the electric steering rack on a 2007 C2 and it was fairly straightforward to programme tbf.
You do need to get the right part though and you'd be surprised how many small differences there can be within the same model - the motors can be different current rating, the rack can be different ratio (different number of turns lock-lock).
E.g. the C2 Loeb that I changed the rack on, is basically a C2 VTS just with different trim as a 'special edition'. But it actually uses a different rack to the VTS (which in turn uses a different rack to the rest of the range). All look the same externally, but they aren't.

@Wurlycorner, what is the process of programming. Is there a specific diagnostics tool you used and/or are you able to provide a guide. Thank you in advance.

It was a good number of years ago and I can’t recall unfortunately.
I did it via lexia at the time though (I expect diagnox would also work).
I think it may have been nothing more complex than running a calibration on it?
As I say, the key really is getting exactly the right rack.

From reading the above, I would pay the £10 donation, post the car vin and let admin check the steering rack parts are correct. If not then another rack might be needed and you would have the correct part number to help when buying another one. The donation is excellent value, I have received more than my fair share of advice for such a small amount.

Got the diagbox v7.83

Pics attached if this helps... but unable to configure or figure out how this diagbox helps in anyway compared to a regular professional scanner

Hope someone can help... I'm determined to find a solution lol

Please don't duplicate questions in multiple threads, it only causes confusion and you won't get an answer any faster.

Strongly suggest confirming that exactly the right part number rack was fitted is the first step, as has been mentioned.

Indeed...a quick suggests there are about 10 different racks, and a part number change mid life, so the chances of one from a 2009 being correct on a later car, are pretty remote.....

Just want to bump the thread.

I have someone who can do online telecoding but still having some slight trouble with the cars steering rack.

Again the car drives perfect aside from these issues ESP/ASR Faulty. Which disables the ESP.

Checked all the wiring again, all is as it should be. Why is the supply voltage at 24v?

At risk of sounding like a broken record, have you confirmed what the part number of the original rack was and what the part number of the rack you have fitted, is?

Re: Steering Rack replacement

Sadly not, the old one was thrown away. (It isn't my vehicle but more a relatives and they're not exactly helpful)

Looking at the eBay listing from when the rack was purchased, just states part no. 9671732280 1.6HDI 09-16 and when replaced with the original, it was a direct swap. No error messages regarding the power steering (SAS) unless I take out the fuse, power steering works fine. Its not intermittent or playing up. Car drives fine aside from the U1321 and U1121 errors when scanned and everytime the car is turned on ESP is turned off 'ESP/ASR is Faulty' error message on screen. Sadly MOT is due next month and its guaranteed fail if this message isn't gone.

On a side note: Is there any documentation anywhere to say that which part no belongs on which model car?

Edit: Looking at the attached images there is different software reference numbers to that of the rack fitted to the car.

Old: 96 670 397 80
New: 96 717 322 80

Im not sure how Diagbox works entirely when coding so whether a newer software version can be downloaded?
