If Jim starts coming at me with a bent spanner, then I'll just distract him with a picture of a shiny AX. He'll be just like a budgie pecking at a mirror if I show him one of those

I used to have a white one Ryan... Daffodil. Now living with Alasdair :)

Space and resource limitations rule me out of having custody of a third. Happily, I still get to see Daffodil on regular occasions and have a little play with her :-D

Yes and no!!! I built it and on the third test run before taking any pics the speed controller went 'straight through' and I just got full voltage at the motor, not acceptable so I dismantled it again and am in discussion with the supplier!! More news as and when!! :? :-D

Well the new speed controlling device from China arrived and this morning I decided to begin butchering the variable speed hammer drill which I found brand new on ebay for £18.50 here and headed for the garage. As I opened the box a different idea occurred to me, maybe I could rig a temporary mount using the drill as it is rather than butcher it for the controller!! So I took a few measurements by eye and got out the jig saw to produce a mounting board:
The mounting board to support the drill.
The mounting board to support the drill.
I decided to use the drive belt as part of the stabilising kit so I could apply downward tension with cable ties. (Remember the whole thing has to be easily dismantled and assembled so SWMBO can park in the garage!) So I started applying cable ties until I was satisfied that I had a firm fixing:
The £18.50 drill

Front with ties

Chuck with downward ties
Chuck with downward ties
Having got it secure I was able to tension the belt by easing the hub up in the workmate jaws and managed to get it pretty accurate. So I turned it on!!

So I put that down as a success, especially as I have kept the expensive chinese drill (included spare brushes , 3 drill bits, chuck key and depth guage!) intact to replace my old proper mains hammer drill which died a couple of years ago :-D
