That wing looks great, have always been scared to touch up panels with a can, never think I can get it to look good again.

It used to be near impossible to get a good match with rattle cans but nowadays the technology for producing the right colour has moved on to the point that all you have to worry about is getting an even run free finish. It is helped by modern paints holding their true colour much better so if working on a late 20th or 21st century car it really is quite easy to get a good finish.
However I still believe it is better to have the paint mixed for you and not buy a 'ready made' variety from accessory shops. There are a number of companies who will do it and send it to you.
I'll edit in the one I use here when on my laptop :-D

Some people have brilliant colour perception, and can work out the correct colour makeup just by looking at a sample.

Mick. Understand what you are saying, I got one of those cans that is supposed to match the colour code for the car, its still sitting here unused. My problem is how to actually do it. If I mask the area to be touched up I am scared of leaving a line where the masking was, if I don't mask well it can go everywhere. I have a small area nearside wing down low near the front that has a small scrape mark, the sort of mark when you try and get out of a tight spot, and miss judge distances when turning. I also got one of those touch up brushes in the end used one of those, it covers to help prevent rust but is not perfect.

This is an example from my supplier:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/392371953474 ... 1369645853
I have bought a number from them and never had a bad match. As for the hard masking line, one technique that works quite well is to loosely fold the masking tape back on itself so that the edge is a 'curl' in the tape. When you paint some will go under the curl and some will not giving you a soft join which once set after 48 hours at least you can cut back and produce a flowing blend. Give it a go, one good thing is that any paint job can always be redone if it goes wrong!! :-D

Mickthemaverick I've used the same supplier prior to this attempt, I did have one touch-up pot from there that was very opaque, I got this job from my local auto shop, 'custom mix' - not the cheapest but the colour is good and the metallic content seems ok, there is some paint spots caused (I believe) by pigments not mixing fully.

I also need to clean up the lower edge of the ns front door which has started to get scabby ....

civvie I didn't really have a choice here as the wing had started to disappear  The replacement wing was also off the car whilst I sprayed it  I would have liked a better shine and I'm hoping a mild cutting paste will help in a couple of weeks ....
