Citroen C5 X7 Auto Gearbox issue

Post by ds21h »

Hi, I have a 2013 C5 X7 2.2 Hdi with the
6 speed auto box.
Currently done 230k kms with a gearbox oil change done at 220k.
Recently there is an issue with the gearbox, when selecting DRIVE there is a loud clunk from the box as it engages, and it moves forwards a couple of inches even with the brake pedal applied.
Once in DRIVE then the rest of the changes are smooth both up and down the box.
If I select Reverse there is no clunk, just a smooth engagement.
Could anyone help please ?
Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark

That's quite a lot of KMs if it's the first oil change to be honest. When you changed the oil, 1) did you follow the correct procedure for this operation and 2) Did you use the correct gearbox oil for your build date (there are 2 types and the correct one for the AM6 gearbox variant must be used) and finally did you reset the gearbox oil counter with the diagnostic tool?

If you have Diagbox, I would run a global diagnostic on it to see if there are any faults codes registered. The AM6 auto box has plenty of possible fault codes, so may be worth a scan if it is not already in refuge mode or issuing any warnings on the dash / messages.

A bit of Googling indicates that this is a common issue with these transmissions, caused by valve block wear or blocked solenoids.

I came across this company who will diagnose and recondition your valve block, which would be a lot cheaper than fitting a new transmission.

Hi Marc many thanks for the reply.
My local garage did the gearbox oil change when they did the timing belt and waterpump and fitted a second hand EPB assemby at the same time.
They did 3 oil changes, but I don't know about the re-setting of the counter, and the garage is shut for holidays now until the 22nd August.
Currently I do not have any warnings on the dashboard and I will try and get a Lexia on the car later this week and do a scan.

The oil used is RAVENOIL ATF 6HP Fluid

Thanks
Mark

I'd need your VIN (automasked on post submission) to check your Euro Standard to advise of the correct oil standard for this specific vehicle and gearbox version of the AM6.

Ok, so your vehicle is Euro 5 rated and will be an (AM6-2 / AM6-2 / AT6/ AT6-3) type gearbox, as opposed to the earlier AM6.

So the PSA recommended oil is JWS 3324 or AW1 equivalent, (PSA Part: 9734R7 for a 2 litre container). Don't use JWS 3309 oil which is a different specification and was for the earlier Euro 4 AM6 Gearbox.

Seems like Ravenol does not have needed type of oil in production.

Hi Marc, I've done a scan with a Lexia this morning and no fault codes, apart from a broken rear parking sensor which I knew about.

I have not use the car for 3 days and moving it this morning the first couple of changes from Park/ reverse into Drive were smooth, then the next couple the clunk returned increassing in severity.

Off to check the gearbox oil level.

Hi Mark

Have a look at my illustrated post here:
viewtopic.php?p=624045#p624045

I have put up the correct Oil change guide for the AM6 in that post, as part of removing and refitting the hydraulic block and solenoid valves for David's AM6 on his 407 Coupe. The oil drain section is first, then the block / solenoid section, finishing with the refilling of the box, so it may be useful for you to see what's involved.

Hi Marc, sorry for the belated reply to your previous message.
i have done another 3 oil changes over the last couple of weeks and now need to re-set the counter, I can find how to read the couter on the Lexia but not how to re-set it, is there a guide on the forum please?

I still have the jerk between neutral and Drive but not all the time, and all the other changes are smooth and no fault codes.
Here's hoping a counter re-set might do the trick.
Thanks
Mark

Have a look at Elis's post here. Near the bottom, you can see the screen where you reset the oil counter. So looks likely to be in the main Repair Menu:
