I wonder how many on the forum have actually driven an electric car. I sort of think they are on their way.
If you have given it a go like Stu...post it up! :-D

Well my son (31) passed his (Auto) driving test in May 2022 and in June 2022 he bought a VW e-Golf (Reg Jan 19) with 33,000 miles for around 20K off the internet

He done this despite (or maybe because of  ) being brought up with Citroens [-X

My initial thoughts were crazy to spend that amount of money on your first car but he seems more than happy with it so far ....

Revenue weight 2020 kg

I had a quick drive - easy enough to drive, even easier to speed  especially in a 30 limit it's swift, tinted windows are fine but I'm not used to 'tinted' appearance when using exterior mirrors

Steering rack appeared very quick as I scared him at my first left turn (still in my 'Activa' mode) and nearly kerbed his lovely alloys 8-[

Everything else was very intuitive ....like a Golf but without the audio effects :dunno:

That meets the criteria Skull. I would expect his EV to hold its value pretty well over the period he keeps it, and should provide significant savings for him in fuel and maintenance costs.

I'm not sure he'll notice any 'savings' as it's his first car and he had been cycling to work for 4 years with 20K in his bank :?:

I'm more likely to notice a saving as I no longer have to pick him up and bring him around for his Sunday roast ....and then take him home again

A report in the local press has brought out all the EV naysayers, Gloucester police have, I think, five EVs and the cops have said they run out of 'umph' on the way to jobs and can't find chargers.
I get the feeling they feel they've been downgraded from their usual BMW playthings.

20 grand for a car with little over 100 mile range...still, a step up if you only had Shank's pony before!

That made it from the Stroud News and Journal up to Fleet News. Maybe they should order some F150 Lightnings from the US of A. Should provide them with that feeling of superior macho-ness, as well as being able to power a home for 4 days, so should cope with a few flashing lights for a couple of hours.

There will always be the naysayers, and the over-exaggerators of problems, and the reluctant participants in the workforce, who will rail against the change. Alongside that there may well be some genuine difficulties for specialist vehicles which are not beyond the wit of the manufacturers or the customers to solve.

Who knows where residual values are going :?: Not me, but it wouldn't surprise me if when the time comes to upgrade or change that vehicle, there will be supply pressure for used electric vehicles and the likelyhood that not a lot will be "lost" on depreciation in the time of ownership.

If it drops £5,000 in three years of ownership it will still be relatively cheap motoring for the miles it does alongside the savings in maintenance and running costs compared to a petrol vehicle. The advantage as of a few weeks ago was that home charging was 1/4 the equivalent cost of petrol beautifully illustrated in my doctored picture of Morrisons prices. The gap has widened now as petrol prices have gone up, as have most On road chargers, (but not Chargeplacescotland or NCC which are still 30p/kWH and 35p/kWH respectively as of now).

As for range, sample size 1 again...it isn't a problem even in England's last wilderness with the tale told in summary here earlier in this thread . 25,000 miles in 2½ years, haven't run out of electricity once granted haven't been further south than Yorkshire or further north than Edinburgh but in sample size 1 that's fine! :-D

How close is anyone to Braintree or Norwich :?:
Gridserve launches new electric vehicle test drive programme
A new electric vehicle (EV) test drive programme has been launched by Gridserve Car Leasing at its Electric Forecourts in Braintree and Norwich.

The programme is being launched on Saturday (July 16) at Gridserve’s first EV Awareness Day of 2022 and drivers are invited to book to drive a range of cars from Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, Polestar 2, Mercedes EQB and the latest Nissan Leaf.
