The spring is 100% not sitting correct. It should always be straight no matter where it is in its travel.

Looks like the bottom part of the spring assembly is broken - just hope that's the last of the problems here - didnt dare to take it off without the new one tho

My spring is this colour when clean. Did you buy the car off a boy racer?

, I had to clean it, it looked horrible in the photos.

Hehe - nope! But thanks a lot for the photos - parts should be here on Saturday or Monday. It looks to me from your pic that the resting position of the clutch is higher than that of the brake pedal - as mine is they are level.

When I tried to remove the slave - which I am no longer sure I should do - I noticed the line delivering fluid into is fixed (i.e. not flexible). I guess I might need to unplug that to allow pulling back the cylinder shaft?

Now you mention it the clutch pedal is slightly higher than the brake pedal. I imagine it's a safety thing for braking hard. As for the slave I'm not sure. I certainly wouldn't replace the slave until the spring is done. Who would of thought if I asked that stupid question at the start it could of been solved by now.

thanks again Rp0thejester - it makes perfect sense that the clutch pedal should be above the brake for exactly that reason - its way higher on my BMW. Im going to take out the spring remains tomorow and see if anything can be salvaged from it - in any case the new parts should be here on Monday latest.

Taking a closer look at your picture again I fear the problem might not be the spring at all but the bracket that attaches the other end of the spring - look at the position it is in your car versus mine - in yours it is much more towards the engine whereas in mine it is almost vertical...what can i do but take it out as it is and try to finagle it into the right position.

I don't think the bracket is an issue, it's probably different because looking at the photos yours is LHD and mine is RHD. Looking back at the diagrams that Marc sent you it looks perfectly normal.

That looks much healthier! IIRC I had my spring replaced as it started making an annoying squeaking noise when depressing and releasing the clutch pedal. Citroen were aware of it. A new spring sorted it out.

Ok myself and a real mechanic went at it today:
  • Spring and assembly fine - identical to spare parts
    Broken clutch pedal
See picture...

Now what could possibly have caused such a break??
Any advice most gratefully received.
