Novice owns 205 GL (1990) in Vietnam

Post by John Clearlight »

Bonjour! This petite French import 205 GL was still running when I bought it last December and I've just overhauled it. I've yet to find out which TU engine is in it; probably a TU3 A/K but the displacement (cc/cm3) isn't even listed in the Vietnamese vehicle registration! I've attached photos including the VIN plaque (VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]) and two tags riveted to the engine with codes: K3A (legislation type?) and 1F SOC 673512. The single carb is Weber. I really need your expert engine identification please.
Thank you from the tropical side of the world.

It's quite old so there is no useful data that was transferred over to the later electronic systems. All I have is what you already know - a Carburettor TU3 with K3A as the variant. From what I can see the original engine marking would of been K1A, but a replacement engine at the time would of been K3A designation.

I have a build date of 21/03/1990, so about 32 years old.
It has a BVM4 gearbox and the Carb is a Weber

But there is no further data on the specifications. It goes without saying that most of the parts are no longer available from PSA for this vehicle now.

So then it is a 1360cc TU engine?
Could you explain what the K3A designation is about? (related to EU emission standards?)
And how were you able to get such an exact build date? (Digital database?)
Yes, OEM parts are scarce and I may soon need a new clutch friction disc and pressure plate!
Thanks for the time you took to look into this. Much appreciated.

No problem.

The VIN provided the RPO code is the build date (4881). The K3A is the PSA engine designation and nothing to do with the Euro Emission Standards which didn't come into being until July 1992, so a few years early for those.

So the engine is CARBURETTOR TU3 with an engine designation of K3A.

Hello Marc,
yes, the carburettor is an Italian made Weber with markings: 34TLP 14 and beneath that 201 1989.
The mechanic says that adjustments to the carb are limited because "it's worn-out and the electric pump is not working with the wiring cut off."
(He spoke to my wife in Vietnamese and I am not sure what he's talking about  )
The car runs all right as long as the idling RPM is set high but jerks when set lower.
He suggest swapping it for a carb from a 1995 Mazda 323 (1.3).

Another problem is noisy start up, sometimes with squealing belt slip and other "grinding-rumbling" noises which I don't hear anymore once the car gets going. These noises seem to come from the area where the AC compressor and alternator belts are connected to the crankshaft.
I haven't much confidence with the way they adjusted the valve clearances and timing belt tension without any precise measuring tools.
I am not sure that is the cause and I can't make out if there are noises from the valves above the general din of the engine.
Would you please advice on these issues?
Thank you Marc.

Hi John

I'm sure there will be some others who will chip in here as the last time I saw a carburettor was on my petrol Citroen CX back in the 80s and that was a pig to sort, so was passed on to a friend to sort!

I'm sure there are plenty of 'old skool' mechs here that will be able to help you.

Dear Marc,
I will do as you suggest.
In any case I've decided not to change the carb set up, I think it's working well enough.
The major problem I have to deal with now concerns the crankshaft which causes the grinding rumbles because of faulty installation and bearings.
Thank you again Marc.

Hi John,

I can’t help with the carb issues. There is quite a few guys rallying 106’s and 205’s. If you can get hold of one of those guys, they might be able to advise?

As for the grumbling from the crank area, I’d be inclined to check the condition and alignment of the belts first, then check for any worn out bearings in the crank pulley. I assume yours doesn’t have PAS?
