Gearbox number

Unread post by Colin2206 »

It looks like I will be replacing the gearbox on my wife's car; 207cc, 1.6l vti, 2008.
I've seen other threads showing a position above and to the rear of the clutch slave cylinder/actuator lever as where the box should be marked with the number. I've clean the area and just can't find the number. The other location listed is a label on the end cover; any label is long gone.

Is there another location on the box that is marked?
I understand there are quite a number of variations on the standard box, so I want to make sure I get the correct repalcement from start.

Any help appreciated.

Regards,
Colin.

What's the VIN of the vehicle and I'll be able to advise where the identification is supposed to be located Colin.

Ok, so here is where the labels should be:
coling gbox.JPG
Location of engraving of serial and gearbox numbers (as "a").
Identification label ( as "b").

If this doesn't help, I can provide the PSA part number for you, but this does require a membership upgrade Colin as we have to pay for this service - details below if this would be of use:

Well got the box off today. 2nd. time in six months, still a big job.

I've checked the location GiveMeABreakStill has suggested but still can't find a number.
The pressed steel end cover has the number HT02 and the bell housing has a cast number 9659670180. Neither of these are anything like what is quoted on various websites.
Any suggestions as to alternative number locations welcome.

Thanks for the Forum donation Colin.

Ok, so Item (1)

Official Peugeot Part number: 223111, Type CP (16X65), with marking CQ46, £5,894.22
Alternatively, Peugeot offer an exchange gearbox, Part: 223274 with marking of either CQ46 or CQD6, £1895.06

All VAT inclusive direct from Peugeot.

So hopefully you can locate the correct box on the aftermarket now.

Do you know if this mean Peugeot believe both of these is simply plug and play? Or should I expect additional work if I used the CQD6?

I will be spending an hour tomorrow with an old fashioned scrubbing brush and soapy water to see if I can find the marking. At least I can now start the search for a box with these numbers.

Thanks for your help.

No problem, either of these 2 should be fine as they list both these variants under the exchange replacement part number, but the marking should be on the box.

If you need any other parts in future Colin, just pop you request up on the official parts thread here:

Well got a replacement gearbox from a scrappy, delivered to the door today.
Stripped off the surplus parts and gave it a good clean and found the pattern number and the unique box number. So I went back to the original box and found the numbers. When I say found, I of course mean I scrubbed the area with strong detergent, degeaser and a wire brush on a drill and eventualy found them. For these boxes the location seems to be on the bellhousing above the anti-torque bracket at the bottom of the box. On the replacement box well marked (20CQ46, 203695) and easy enough to find, on the original, poorly marked (20CQ46, 1050008?) and I'm not sure I have the correct unique number. I will have to make sure I get it because;
I intent to fit new driveshaft seals, got them from a Peugeot dealer, but when I made a close comparison between the two boxes found a small difference. The seal housings are ok but behind the seal landing, inside the original box, is what looks like a floating plastic ring with the outer circumfrance segarated/raggaed edge. I've tried to take photos but the camera found the close foucus hard.
I would appreciate any advice on this. Maybe someone has come across this before and can say if this is important or not. I'll be going back to Peugeot tomorrow but not sure what sort of welcome I'll get when I start talking about gearboxes from a scrappy.
The black ring you see in the Original Box 1 & 2 is the plastic ring.

The black ring you see in New Box 1 & 4 is just deep shadow, there is nothing there.

I cant really see it properly but if its a plastic gear it may be for a road speed sensor, you car more than likely wont need it as the speedo info will probably come via the ABS system. Some gearboxes still seem to have the drive gear fitted or it may be from an older car. there is normally a blanking plug in place of the speed sensor now.

The only electrical switch fitted is the reversing switch, so an inactive speed gear is a possibility. My first thought was some sort of oil seal or splash guard to protect the main external seal. But on, that both boxes had the same style/shape seals, so I would assume they are factory fitted. The new seal from Peugeot is slightly different in appearance and is the updated version as the original is no longer supported.
Eitherway it will now be tomorrow before I can get time to give it a good look.

Well wheeler you called it correctly. I had a good look at it and there is a blanking plug above it and with it removed I can see it is a plastic helical gear.
Now just to get the box onto the car. Tried twice and just can't get the splines lined up. The old tool I have seems to have dent on it which throws off the alighment as it is tighten up and the new plastic one is a waste of £10. I think I might just try a rod wrapped in masking tape, old school.

Should just be able to line the disc up by eye / feel so that it's even all the way round. You have checked that the disc will actually fit on the splines....?

Horror of horrows, same model of gearbox with different input shaft, would never happen?????????

I had the same thought as I sat down with a glass of chilled white wine.

leave to the day the evils thereof

I'll check tomorrow.
