20CQ88 gearbox in 2011 C3 1400 diesel
My gearbox has thrown its hand in so I probably need to find a second hand one.
I do not have it out and in bits yet so maybe a repair will sort it but I doubt it.
The gearbox is numbered "20CQ88" and the question is whether or not this defines the gearbox completely or may that number represent gearboxes with different ratios.
The reason for the question is that there are plenty of used ones that are from petrol cars but few from diesels. I tried asking a few sellers but no one seems to know and neither does the Internet in general.

CQ88 shows up for a petrol gearbox - and not under a 1.4 diesel - has it been incorrectly fitted previously hence your issues? - which you haven't mentioned.
If you do want official part numbers, we can help, but as we are charged for this from PSA, we do ask for a membership upgrade. This will provide you with part numbers and parts diagrams for up to 2 years though - if you want to go ahead, details below, then just pop your VIN up:

Re: 20CQ88 gearbox in 2011 C3 1400 diesel
I do not believe it to be incorrect and there are 20CQ88 gearboxes occasionally, too many for them to be mistakes.
The fault so far:
I lost 5th yesterday on the motorway. 1 through 4 worked fine so I carried on home. When I got home I need to reverse up the drive so stuck it in reverse, no problem but could not get it out again.
Eventually I got it out and reversed up the drive then started looking. It is stuck in reverse again but with a serious amount of messing and strength it is possible to get it out and select 1 through 4.
I disconnected the cables under the bonnet and the gearlever is OK, free and moving the cables correctly. I removed the bob weight but it was free enough anyway so the problem is within the gearbox.
No problem going in and out of reverse but will not go across the gate easily. The "up down" arm is not updowning correctly. It does feel as though maybe the selector has jumped out of the selector rod. I think next thing is to remove the big nut on the nearside of the gearbox. I suspect it will be a indent spring and ball. A bit of googling first to see if I can find an exploded view of the gearbox.

Ok, but I'm just telling you that CQ88 was not fitted to an HD1 1.4 on a C3 (A51)
CQ88 was fitted to petrol EP3C and EB2F engines, hence why I suggested it may have been previously replaced with an incorrect type.

Yes, I understand what you are saying.
I just need to know if 20CQ88 defines all aspects of the gearbox. I included a description of the fault because you seemed to want to know why I was asking.
There is no way that this particular fault can be related to an incorrect gearbox being fitted.

Apparently this car left the factory with a CQ66 gearbox.
There's food for thought. It seemed fine with the CQ88. Maybe I read the number wrong last time I had it out.

Your photo shows a ....66, if I read it right.
Is that the box in the car now?

Re: 20CQ88 gearbox in 2011 C3 1400 diesel
Yes, that is from the one in the car.
You reckon it is 66 then. I still reckon it is 88 but I suspect you are right. I got the number from the box, not a picture but looking at other pictures on the Internet you are probably right I think.
Thinking about it it is bound to be 66 because my luck runs that way. 66 is at least £250 used, 88 is half that.
I feel a repair coming on.

It is definitely a CQ 66! And that is exactly what some of the DV4C engines are fitted with.... there are NO CQ 88 boxes fitted to 1.4 HDi A51 C3s.

Re: 20CQ88 gearbox in 2011 C3 1400 diesel
So does the number, be it 88 or 66, fully define the gearbox in terms of ratios, final drive ratio, bell housing shape, gear change and all the rest of the variables that the myriad of boxes fitted to the numerous Citroen, Peugeot and other cars?
Are there any tables anywhere that outlines the differences between different numbered gearboxes?

After you have the gearbox part number which determines the correct type like the variant and the final drive; the specific markings define the ratios.

So
20CQ66 is casting shape and final drive ratio.
1009973 is internal gear ratios.
Correct?

Not sure where you are getting 1009973 from....

That's probably the gearbox serial number.
