Cooling Fan Replacement
Hi all,
I am new to this forum. I have a 2014 C4 Picasso GR EXCL, and the air con has stopped working when stationary. I have Checked the radiator cooling fan and it is definitely U/S. The motor is mechanically free but the windings are open circuit. Have applied voltage to the motor and still no joy.
I have purchased a replacement, but cannot see a way to remove the failed unit. The fan is fitted behind the radiator, rather than in front of it. All the information I can find shows the fan assembly mounted in front of the radiator. Can anyone supply a replacement procedure?
Thanks

Re: Cooling Fan Replacement
If you pop your VIN up for me (automasked on post submission) I will take a look at the system you have and see if I have something to assist.

Re: Cooling Fan Replacement
The VIN will automatically be auto-masked by the forum security software. Type it in here, without any spaces, and the software will do its' job (like this; VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff] ). Please do not post a picture of the VIN, as the software cannot recognise and auto-mask it.

Re: Cooling Fan Replacement
It is definitely mounted behind the radiator, but are you sure you want to tackle this? The bumper, headlights and transverse section need to come off to get it out. The dealer would have it on a lift to remove and replace all this.

Yep, gonna give it a try anyway. Took my wifes car to a dealer (Renault) to get a front window actuator fault looked at...they charged £150 to make a video that detailed all the other faults on the car, and quoted £1300 for the other repair work, and another £650 to fix window. I asked how much to video a christening, and could they recommend any one that could fix a window actuator, and repaired it myself. Dealers have lost touch with the customer completely. I think they are run by money orientated staff rather than mechanical engineers.

The reason I asked if you wanted to go ahead with it yourself is that I may be able to get some guidance up for you if that is the case. Leave it with me and I'll put something up this morning.

Re: Cooling Fan Replacement
Once you have the vehicle in position, you should disconnect the battery following the BSI Reset / Battery Disconnect / Reconnect Procedure as the fan may kick in with the engine not running, as part of the post cooling operation.
Once you have taken off the following:
Refit:
Position the bonnet release cable.
Refit:
Connect and secure the connector (at "a").
Connect the connectors (at "b", "d").
Refit:
Then follow the battery reconnection part of the BSI Reset / Battery Disconnect / Reconnect Procedure
Check and top up the coolant fluid level if necessary.
Start the engine; Wait for the fan assembly to cut in then cut out.
Stop the engine.
Once you have taken off the following:
- The front bumper
- The air resonator (according to equipment)
- The air filter housing (according to equipment)
- The headlamps
Disconnect the connectors at "b", "d". Disconnect and unclip the connector (at "a"). Remove the bolt (1). Unclip the electrical harness (at "c"). | Remove:
|
Separate the release cable from the engine cover. Remove:

|
Remove:
| Refitting CAUTION: Position the engine cooling radiator studs (at "e"). |
Refit:
- The cooling fan electric control unit (9)
- The (8) bolt
- The cooling fan (7)
- The bolts (1), (6)
- The upper crossmember (5)
- The bolts (4)
Position the bonnet release cable.
Refit:
- Transverse front section (3)
- The bolts (2)

Re: Cooling Fan Replacement
Thanks for the replies all. I have managed to get the fan replaced. My set up was different to the Pics supplied, and I gave up in trying to take out the complete cowl assembly as it looked like I would need to drain down and disconnect the radiator hoses. Also I broke the bottom clips trying to separate the Plastic clamp assembly from the plastic fan housing see attached pic. So decided to just change the failed fan. So removed the 3 off 8mm bolts. It was tight getting it out and putting the new one in. But ,managed it. Just hope that I have not disturbed the bottom radiator seating. But I now have a cooling fan that functions and have air con when stopped.
