New C5 Suspension system malfunction - max. speed 90 km/h

Post by Sasan »

Hi Dears,
I have a new C5 2011 and yesterday faced with an error message " Suspension system malfunction - max speed 90 km/h " but steel car was running. After parking car and switch it off, car went to lowest position. I started again the car but suspension system never worked without any error message. I checked visually some of related fuses according to the manual but it seems all of them are Ok.
Please help what are next steps to find the cause and remedies.
Thanks

Maxi fuse 40 amp.

It may have snapped, a common problem with C5. I change my maxi fuse just last week.

Maxi fuses should be underneath the smaller fuses in engine bay.

I own a 2005, but am sure your car will be same fuse layout.

Search 'maxi fuse suspension' in this forum.

Thank you very much. I'll do that but I think C5s before 2009 and after that are different in many aspects. However, checking has no cost!!

While there are major differences between the earlier C5s and the X7 variant (which is what you have), they all use Maxi fuses for the 'heavy' electrical loads. If you find that the relevant Maxi fuse has failed make sure to replace it with one of the correct amperage. Should it then fail again not long afterwards it is possible you have a leak in the hydraulic pump area.

Thank you very much. In old C5s this maxi fuse is 40 amp and its location is clear. Is there any photo or other guide which shows exact location of this fuse in New C5s ? Is it same 40 amp ?

No. Maxi Fuses are much 'heavier', and are used to protect a group of items (for example, on my C5 one Maxi Fuse is used for the front seat heaters and motors, as well as the tow-bar electrics. However, there are then weaker fuses specifically for each of those five items). Normally (but not always) they are 'hidden' below the normal fuses in the engine bay fusebox. I cannot tell you how to get to them, as I have not had to do so myself.

I rechecked all the relevant fuses again, inside the cabin ( Fuse boxes A,B and C ) and under bonnet ( above the battery ) but all were Ok. What would be the next step in diagnostic ?

You need to get it on Diagbox to get a proper diagnostic done and provide the fault codes here.

Check you have no oil leaks under the car if possible. Lowering the car suspension was not a good move at the time if the pump was not operating as it released the pressure in the system making it almost impossible to move the vehicle at this stage.

Make sure you do a proper check of the 40A fuse - not a visual inspection - pictures of location here:

Thank you very much Marc,
The problem solved. I explain here how. I took the car to the repair shop. I found that there is an extra maxi fuses box under the visible and exposed fuse box above the battery. (Photo No.1)
First we checked related maxi fuses and found them all Ok. Then removed the battery. At right side of battery there is another box with red color cover which is a power distribution box including 2 special fuses .( Photo No.2) one of them is 40 amp and is related directly to power of suspension system hydraulic pump. ( Photo No.3 ) . That fuse was disconnected . We replaced it and suspension system came back to its normal operation.
