C5 Mk. 1 Strut Refurbishment?

Post by jamescarruthers »

Sadly I may have a leaky front strut on my sisters C5. I was hoping it would have just been the return pipe but after issuing instructions and pictures I’m told it is more serious than that.

I called Pleiades about a strut refurbishment and they said that they couldn’t be overhauled. Is this true? I wasn’t sure if they didn’t do the overhaul or if it was impossible.

Thankfully Edwards & Sons have some second hand ones in stock at not a bad price.

Last question: are there just two types of Mk. 1 C5 strut? Hydractive 3+ (Sports button equipped) and Hydractive (no button)?

Hi James, the front struts for the MK Is are all the same, it's the rears that are different as well as the left and right obviously that are different.
James Strut.PNG
Part 5271H4 Left Strut
5271H5 Right Strut

Both no longer available from Citroen as you are probably aware.

Okay, good to know.

So is the difference between Hydractive 3+ cars and Hydractive cars in the strut head “B” in the previous figure? Is “strut head” the correct name?

The head is rusty on one side so it seems like a good time to change it. Sod’s law has the leak on one side and the rusty head on the other.

Are you able to provide the removal & installation instructions from the Citroen manuals?

Also, without a Lexia, the pressure is going to need to be dumped manually after putting it on low setting. What is the best way to do this?

There are some used ones on Ebay but they're not cheap.

The rear struts are different depending on H3 or H3 plus, but it is the Sphere pressures that are also different and the addition of centre spheres for H3 plus models.

So the round saucers are referred to as suspension spheres. Although a Lexia is preferred to fully depressurise the system, the front and rear axles can be depressurised manually.

There is probably a guide I have put up previously, so I’ll locate it and edit this post with a link shortly.

Ok, so Here is the Strut removal guide for the MK I and MK II:

viewtopic.php?p=620555#p620555

I included in this guide above the depressurisation for the Hydractive 3 only (as that was what the member had), but you can find the depressurisation for BOTH systems in this link: Just follow the bit for the H3+ system.
