Thanks for posting that Gibbo, having read Brunel's theory it is my understanding that the train was "sucked" along by removing the air in front of it causing low pressure and thereby allowing the atmospheric pressure at the back to push it along. Is that how others see it?

Brunel did do a design where there was a 'slug' that went into a tube and then was vacuum pulled, pulling the Atmospheric Train with it. The problem was the seal (the tube had a slot out of the top where the 'arm' went onto the 'slug'). Brunel used oiled leather, which had to be properly maintained, and rats would eat the leather.

He was way ahead of his time with this... It would surely look a lot neater than the standard 25Kv OHLE 'knitting' that spoils the look of what otherwise would be some very scenic railways... And who knows, cheaper too maybe...

The biggest problem would still be keeping the pipework sealed. Yes, technology (in all of the related areas) has moved on, but so has human nature (or, rather, stupidity). I recall seeing (on BBC Click) a Magnetic/Atmospheric railway (reduced scale model) where a very powerful magnetic 'slug' was travelling along a sealed (non-magnetic) pipe sited in a rail line, towing a train (which had a partner magnet on an arm close to the pipe. This train travelled up and down slopes and round bends. While the model worked well there would have to be a way of monitoring the magnetic 'grapple' so that, should the magnets let go of each other, the 'slug' does not go hammering along the pipe as high speed, possibly causing damage at the terminus end, while a following train does not plough into the back of a stationary train.
