2015 1.6 Blue HDi 120 308 Adblue problem

Driving back through France to the UK last week the dashboard, and then the centre display, showed these warnings:

This showed first and then, when the UREA warning light started flashing, these also came up:

At one point this message showed. I had topped the Adblue tank up before we went away and it was still about 2/3 full when we got back:

A few times the warnings would stop displaying and I wouldn't notice that until they restarted. This had the fortunate effect of resetting the "Starting prevented in 700 miles" message as I had worried about not being able to make it back home.

Even stranger, the car surprised me by going into Stop & Start mode at the Channel Tunnel check-in booths. There's a long list of things that have to be "just right" for that to happen. S&S then engaged again a few hundred yards from our house while we were waiting at some traffic lights. This after having the warnings displayed for most of the trip up through the UK.

I was able to run the Diagbox a couple of days ago and after clearing the faults and then running the engine these are the faults that came back:

Is this the dreaded Adblue pump failure problem? Or maybe, even though it's not mentioned, the Adblue injector?

This is the same car that I replaced an injector on before we went away. There was still the occasional misfire but going through France it seemed OK although I did feel that it was down on power and that the fuel consumption wasn't as good as it should have been.

Annoyingly the car is due for its MOT at the end of the month and there's a limit to what I can do at the moment as we are in quarantine for another week. I may even have to give the car to the garage and tell them to do what's necessary to fix and MOT it.

I think that you'll find this is the dreaded UREA pump fault and if I'm not mistaken, well-known inside PSA, with their recommended action to replace the whole UREA pump assembly.

I think you'll need to contact the dealer with this one Paul as I don't have the specifics for this engine, but the combination of the U0118 87 and the P1435 00 would certainly indicate this.

I was hoping somebody might say no it wasn't but you've merely confirmed my worst fears.

Afterthought, you said UREA, I said Adblue. We are talking about the same thing aren't we? The terms are surely interchangeable?

What's the part number for the tank and pump please? I'm aware that there is a supersession and that the new one requires an update for (presumably) the engine ECU. This will no doubt be a dealer only job.

Do you have the details of what's involved with removal and fitting?
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

Yes Adblue / Urea - same pump I'm referring to.

I think this would indicate that the whole thing reservoir and pump comes as one unit as I can't see a separate pump anywhere, but item (1) and constituent parts.

AdBlue is a (trademarked) brand name not the stuff itself, Many manufacturers use Urea or DEF etc rather than a trademarked brand name presumably to save on royalty/licencing payments?
If you look at the warning message from a Transit below you can see the ® symbol to show its a registered trade mark.
The Fluid is generally just referred to as AdBlue kind of the same way vacuum cleaners get referred to a Hoovers.

Update:

I phoned up our local Peugeot dealer to ask how much they would charge to code in a new urea tank if I were to fit it myself and then bring it in. They were aware of the tank problem and told me £50.00 (inc VAT). They then told me that Peugeot had issued "guided support" for vehicles with the pump problem and that they had extended the warranty on the tank from the general 3 years to 5 years/90,000 miles.

In these cases Peugeot would pay for the cost of the tank and the customers would pay the labour cost, which would be £70.00 (inc VAT), which includes coding the new tank to the ECU. Our 308 was 5 years old in April but they suggested that, as that was during lockdown, I should contact customer service and see if they treat us as a goodwill case. Well, the short answer is that they won't because of the car's mileage of 62,000 in 2019.

So I went back to Ebay and priced up tanks. There were several vendors in Europe offering new tanks (correct part number) at priced less than in the UK even including carriage. I now have a tank on its way to us for €600.00 plus €10.00 carriage (£583.51) - considerably less than the UK price.

I had one further idea. I got back in touch with the Peugeot dealer and asked whether, if I supplied a brand new tank, they would fit it for the same price they would have charged me for one supplied under warranty. After a few moments thought the bloke on the desk said they would. So, as coding would have cost me £50 anyway, they would fit it for £20.00. A no-brainer really. Now I just have to wait for the tank to arrive.

Tank arrived today. Remarkable service from Poland; I've had far worse delivery times from vendors in the UK.

Car is booked in for next Tuesday.

I got my suspension strut from Poland - very good service and fast delivery also.

Incidentally, my Sister has just had a recall on their C5 Aircross for the UREA tank to be sorted - they're not sure if it's a replacement or a software update required yet.

She should surely be within warranty if it does need replacement.

What year is it? The problem with the 308 tank is supposed to be fixed from 2017 on. Maybe the same for others in the group?

It was actually a Citroen recall that advised them of it - so it's booked in. It's a 2020 model!

The 308 went in today for fitting and coding of the new urea tank. As the MOT was due tomorrow I asked them to do that after fitting the tank, which they said they would do for £40.00. Total cost from the dealer was £110.00 which, with the cost of the tank at £583.51 (€610.00), makes a grand total of £693.51.

Picked it up this afternoon. Their biggest worry was apparently that I would get the wrong tank! All warnings are out and only one advisory (front brake pads needed soon) on the MOT so I'm reasonably happy. We've only travelled a couple of miles home so the big test will be during the next thousand miles or so. Fingers crossed!

I've taken the old tank back so I'm curious to see if there's anything obviously wrong with the pump and/or electronics.
