Citroen xsara saloon lights turning on by themselves and no rear fog light

Post by Jeff_1972 »

Hi everyone
Wonder if you could help me I’ve recently bought a Citroen xsara hdi with very low mileage but I have a niggling fault with the lights, they switch on by themselves and the headlight warning light flashes on and off
I’ve also found out I have no rear fog light 🙁
Any help or pointers would be most welcome
Thankyou 😁

Can you clarify under what circumstance the lights turn themselves on?

Without a proper diagnostic, I'm suggesting wither the switch module in the steering wheel or the engine fusebox.

Our C3 with auto lamps played up intermittently switching on the dipped beam on and off during the day and (drivers we didn't know were flashing their lights back at us). Our issue was solved with a new comms unit.

Pop your VIN up so I can see exactly what kit you have.

Without trying to state the obvious have you checked/replaced the foglamp bulb? you haven't mentioned whether you have or not. When you try to switch the fog lamp on does the tell-tale on the dash come on?

Hi guys
It usually happens when I indicate left or right and I have to press the end of the stalk to turn them off,the stalk itself isn’t floppy or anything indicators self cancel as normal and the fog light indicator doesn’t light up on the dash.
My vin number is as follows
VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

Thanks
Jeff

The fog lamp bulb is working when tested on a battery and the terminals are clean and dry

I wonder if the Xsara is old enough to have the same style of wiper/light stalks as the Xantia?

So this has the ANC Control Box with Comms 2000 unit. That would be my first suspect, or the engine fuse box relay. The stalk doesn't have to be 'floppy' for these to fail.

I can Jeff, but for live parts information from the Admin Team, we have to ask members for a min £10 Forum donation (see table below), as we are now charged for access from PSA as of March this year. This will cover you for parts info for up to 2 years though.
A response to your question by a forum admin will require detailed vehicle information that requires you to have made a current contribution to the Forum.

Great, you've now gone green.

Ok, so the Comms unit is part number: 96787362XT
Xsara Comms 2000 Jeff.PNG
It sells for £384.53 inc. VAT. from Citroen, but if you look at this place (link below) and search on that part number, you'll find a choice of new or reconditioned units at far less cost:

Hi Marc
Thanks very much for the info I will look into getting a cheaper recon unit for sure, I took my switch covers off this morning and saw a sticker on top with the numbers 96511187XT so it looks like it’s been changed before 😮

I know that part you quoted was fitted to a 407 and the Xsara (non-Picasso), at some point, but that actual part is not currently listed. It is possible that the number you have is the long manufacturer part number equivalent of the original PSA part number. It's been superseded now anyway for the number I have given you, so you'll be ok with that. :)

£90 for a refurb or £160 for new isn't bad over the PSA price.

I would be wary of second hand parts on the bay or from breakers when it comes to these though, as you really don't know what you are getting and how worn the internals are / clockspring wiring especially.
