Next Job on the 3008!

Post by GF1969 »

Well I had to use my RAC card for the first time ever last weekend.
The alternator drive belt tensioner had failed and the belt chewed up.
Have ordered like for like Gates tensioner via ebay but unless I go to Peugeot I'm struggling to find the definitive correct belt and idler pulley.
Weirdly, even the dealer couldn't tell me what tensioner it was from the part number stamped on it despite the fact it had Peugeot and Citroën logos and was OE the part number on there is apparently a Gates number and was not the part number PSA use for ordering!
Bonkers!
Have to get the idler off to get numbers and I'll find it myself but because the belt is wrecked beyond recognition to lift numbers that'll have to be dealer £££££££££ !
I'll try and get pics for a how-to if I remember..... :-D

The dealer should be able to order parts using your VIN, the tensioner may have been replaced before you got the car, same with the idler.

It's original tensioner. We've had it from nearly new with less than 10k on the clock. It's now 8 yo and only has 32k!
The tensioner, while having Gates logo also has Peugeot and Citroën logos so it's definitely oem. What i was trying to do with the dealer was get the right one. There are 2 tensioners apparently, a left one and a right one. From what I've found this is the left one. The dealer couldn't work it out from the numbers over the phone.

This is it. Cant see how this is pattern part!
Dealer could not ascertain which one it was from the number on it. They claimed it was an internal number between Gates and PSA not the part number!!

Usually the VIN brings up the correct parts for a dealer. Donate a few beer tokens to this site and admin will forever assist you in a parts search

You would probably do better to go to a motor factor like GMF, look for The Parts Alliance and find your local factor, you're likely to find a complete kit, belt and tensioners from the oem manufacturers.

Pop your VIN up that will provide the part number used by PSA.

Thanks for all the tips.
I managed to go online and cross referenced using the Gates numbers. Got a like for like Gates tensioner including post for £33 which is a fraction of dealer price.
This turned out to be the "left " tensioner. The "right" tensioner was OK but the pulley wheel
had been damaged by the belt getting jammed and melting! The pulley wheel was not a separate item and dealer wanted £102 for the whole unit. So took the wheel off the knackered tensioner and swapped them over. They are identical and interchangeable.
The belt I did buy from the dealer because mine was shredded and I couldn't lift any numbers off it. I just went for the genuine part simply for speed as I didn't want to mess around returning incorrect belts etc. Even that was an eye watering £52 but I now have the correct details for future reference.
The car is now 8 years old but with only 32800 miles on it we're not in a rush to get rid yet and after 7 years in our ownership we're not bored with it. It's been good to us thus far. This is the first failure we've had on it to date. Having the part numbers should save us in the future.
This was an easy fix. About 30 minutes. But very fiddly. Had to utilise the slender fingers of my son as my sausage, rheumatic fingers struggled a bit!

Whilst in the area I changed a headlamp bulb. Easy peasy. But the drl bulb i needed to replace.... what a pita that was! Couldn't see it so going by feel. Thought I'd get it out first then remove from cable. I can hear those that have done this before shouting NO!
Turns out no cable, gets power through the fitting. Dropped it. Had to undo undertray to retrieve it!! Only to find the replacement I had was wrong. Had i got the correct one id have seen it twists in with a torx socket. Easy when you know! Haha!

All I need to do on it now is fit new front discs and pads. Discs are very worn. Probably have a 2mm lip each side. Being auto though and with my wife's "point , squirt, slam on brakes" driving style it's hardly surprising.
Add that to 4 new tyres over lockdown, the car has had some money spent on it recently but it's all consumables so can't complain.
Should sail through its MOT next month......
