Thanks. Best bet would be then to buy the new sensor I found online.

Just to post an update here. Got the mentioned sensor from eBay for 80€, brand new. Had some trouble with getting it to my country, seller did not want to send outside EU so I had to get it over the friend who lives in EU, plus this Corona stuff slowed things down.

Anyway, everything is now working as it should. I successfully managed to initialize this new sensor and now auto wipers and auto headlights work properly. Luckily, software update didn't mess it up and even stayed as it is, the latest. I falsely believed that software is inside the sensor, but obviously not.

Well done. The sensor usually will be configured with a specific software version from new as you can see here where I have highlighted it in yellow:

The BSI usually needs top be configured if it has been replaced or at least checked to make sure it is recognised correctly. These may be calibrated differently for the different vehicles.

Well, in Diagbox, I first cleared the errors in rain sensor ecu, then went to Repair and run the initialization procedure which is used when replacing the sensor. Procedure reported success and advised to check for errors again. I did and no errors.

Regarding the software, are there two kinds of software then, one in sensor other somewhere in the car? Because, I still see the version I downloaded before this new sensor and number of downloads still shows 1 in Diagbox.

The Software doesn't need downloading normally, but if a part is replaced at a dealer, they may automatically configure it via their servers, so that it is configured specifically for your vehicle, the systems and options that were fitted at the factory. There is a difference of course between the software and the configuration parameters.

Some ECUs like the BSI, Engine and Auto Gearbox ECU for examples may need to have their software updated in order to correct issues that the network becomes aware of after time / recurring problems and feedback from customers.
