C5 X7 Tourer Tailgate Trim

Post by hawkeye »

Hi chaps,

Ive just repaired the rear washer pipe, using the Citroen repair kit (Part No 6439J4 if you need one). In order to avoid removing the trim I used Lenny's method of making 2 holes in the trim to access the 2 hidden spoiler bolts, but now need to remove the trim as one of the bolts has fallen inside! Does anyone know the correct method and sequence for removing the tailgate trim?

In my experience the procedure starts with ordering a pile of replacement trim clips from Ebay.

As it happens I sorted the rear washers out yesterday on my C5 Tourer. Although you are supposed to remove the 8 retaining clips with tool 7504-T, I managed to carefully pull off the top inner trim by hand without breaking any. As Lenny says though, probably better to have a few new clips to hand. Interesting that a repair kit is supplied by Citroen - what does it consist of? I had to sleeve a section of the plastic convoluted tubing which had started to split and leak enough to not let anything through to the washer jet.

The bottom inner trim pulls off after removing the four bolts under the covers along the bottom edge. Again - the clips may break as they are removed.

Thanks for the info, chaps, especially the diagram which shows where the clips are located.

The washer repair kit consists of about 10" or so of the convoluted pipe, with a straight push-in connector which mates with a connector above the headlining, a new sealing grommet assembly, and a right-angled push-in connector at the other end which mates with the final connection to the washer jet (this is the bit that requires the spoiler to be removed for access). Ironically, the final 3" or so of pipe connecting to the washer jet is the normal rubber washer pipe, so why this wasn't used for the external connection, instead of the convoluted stuff that breaks, is beyond me.

From the part number 6438J4 it looks as if it's not so much a repair section as part of the original pipe - presumably not improved over the original design with that flimsy convoluted tubing? Does the headlining have to be moved to get at the connection at the forward end? Also, given that my lash up repair might not last too long - how much was it?

I have a broken supply pipe which is visisble at the hinge when the tailgate is open.

I am hoping if I separate the broken bit into two parts I can just buy a sleeve to rejoin them.
Is there a recommended method or part?

You can buy that plastic tubing stuff quite cheaply - BUT I would be cautious about putting a new bit of tubing over the old stuff - as the sharp plastic (where it has split) can cut through the wires it is trying to protect. So I would protect the wires first with some insulating tape before replacing the tubing.

I thought this was the feed to the rear wash/wipe. There are no wires inside.

I assumed by 'feed' you were talking about the electrical harness at the top.

Ok, so the rear washer piping:
X7 Rear Washer.PNG
Parts 13 or 14 would seem to be the ones:

6439J4 (13) £14.29 inc. VAT from Citroen
6439J5 (14) £12.79 inc. VAT from Citroen

I wouldn't bother trying to repair it - the pressure and water will probably make any repair temporary at best and runs the risk of leaking water down into the tailgate area where you have a LOT of electrical stuff.

Won't it be pushing water into the tailgate anyway? May be because its at the hinge it gets away without getting into the tail gate. I thought I might try some heatshrink. As you say it could be more trouble than it is worth. By the way that is an amazing route that the pipe runs!

I meant water under pressure will easily find a way out of any weak area repaired - but I doubt heat shrink will cut it to be honest. If the water leaks out with the tailgate closed then it is going to run DOWN into the tailgate, getting everywhere and may likely cause you untold misery in the future when your electrics start to go at the rear. Don't be a cheapskate - get a proper pipe - it won't break the bank! :-D

I changed my rear pipe section today. After reading various threads, I decide to order the genuine citroen part. (Citroen C5 2008-2021 Diesel Window Washer Pipe (#6439 J4 /C5)

The part is actually quite an easy fix to change. For what little money it cost, it's worth just buying the new genuine part to replace rather than bodge I think. I ordered from Fish Brothers and it was £20.01 plus postage.

Fitting was easy enough, but the clips on the boot panel are crap and in fact a few of mine snapped. I don't understand why the rear spoiler also needs the 2 middle bolts hidden. Bit of a poor design along with the actual plastic pipe. As many have said, a rubber hose would have been far superior.

How accessible is the pipe from the point where you see it at the top of the boot door forwards to the front of the car? Do you have to undo loads of stuff or will it pull through from somewhere convenient?
