Can't get into 307cc, battery dead.

Post by clydeowenp »

I brought a 307cc back in November which I knew needed some work. I parked it in my drive and finally got time to work on it yesterday but the battery is dead so I can't get into it! Remote doesn't work so I unlocked the door manually but can't open it. Problem is on this model, once the door is unlocked, the window drops about 5mm when the door handle is touched. When the door is closed the window goes up 5mm into a channel in the roof to stop leaks. With a dead battery the window can't drop so is stopping the door from opening. I don't want to force it or try and spring it out in case I damage something or break the window. The only way I can think of getting in is to get the bonnet open and change the battery but how without damaging it? The only other option is break the window but getting a used replacement will be difficult and a new one very expensive. Has anybody had this problem or can anybody suggest a solution?

I think that you have to pull hard on the door to force the glass past the rubber seal. The glass is quite strong as long as the load is evenly spread.
I had to do this once on our 308 CC.

The glass should pull past the seal no problem to get the door open however dont dry to fully close the door till the battery is powered up & the window glass drops as this has been known to break the glass.

You could jack it up put it on axle stands and using jump leads or a booster pack put power to the starter. This wont turn the car over just supply power to the battery.

I would get jumper pack or leads one to the engine block or gearbox other to the alternator or starter power cable bolt, and use your remote to unlock and open the hood to change the battery or jump start it.

Thanks for the replies, think I'll try pulling the door open as a last resort, knowing my luck glass will break! Can't get in even if I get the door open. I think my best option is the similar suggestions from doctle and goceKU. I also thought I may be able to hook the catch or cable with a wire through the grille. This worked on the MK1 but can't even see the catch on the MK2 cc, even using a mirror.

Unfortunately the problem is the car is parked close to the fence and close to my trailer, caravan is parked on the trailer and front of cc is parked under the caravan (see photos) so I can only jack it up a few inches. I tried to pull it back with a hand winch attached to the towbar and the towbar of my other car, but only succeeded in pulling my car up onto the footpath.

Tried to borrow some skates to put under the rear wheels, everybody borrows my tools and equipment but a different story when I want to borrow something. Too expensive to buy when I'll probably never use them again so I'm making some. If they work I'll use one of the above methods to get in, and will keep you informed of progress, meantime any further suggestions welcome.

When I get in I intend to fit a charging lead to the battery and hide it under the scuttle, lead is for motorbikes so is waterproof. I will also fit another cable to the bonnet release catch and hide it under the car where I can reach it easily if this occurs again.

Does anybody know where I can get a workshop manual, Haynes manual doesn't cover cc. Don't really want to buy on DVD or as a download, last one I brought for a Vauxhall Meriva was useless, had to pay a fee to access anything useful so I sent it back.

Regards Clyde.

Any midgets nearby? Is she in gear? handbrake on? Do you have or can you borrow a trolley jack? It's possible to drag her out on a couple of jacks

That is the worst situation possible, you need to get to any wire that has constant battery power, if you have a key for the door you can open the door enough to connect power to the OBD connector pin 16 that is constant battery power, you can connect a battery charger to it or another battery that will allow you to use the central lock and put it in neutral to push it back.

I had this problem too...after powering up the battery the remote still did not work because the bsi was still asleep and so I had to get the starter motor to turn over 3 times before it woke and allowed the remote to work ...

Unfortunately no midgets small enough to squeeze in, even my neighbor's 6 & 8 year old boys can't squeeze in. Not in gear but handbrake firmly on, surface rust on discs doesn't help. I have a trolley jack and a cross beam I can attach to it, problem is the jack wheels caught in the ruts and nearly tipped it off the jack, gave up on that idea for fear of doing some damage.

Yes this is the worst situation possible, that's why I posted the photos as I didn't think anyone would believe me. Can't get to the OBD socket as it's behind the gear lever, under the ash tray but this gave me an idea. Car is fitted with a towbar and twin 7 pin sockets. Pin 3 on the black socket is earth and pin 4 on the grey socket is permanent live for the caravan interior lights. I made up a lead using pins from a broken socket and connected it to my jump pack. I left it a few minutes for the electronics to settle then tried the remote, success, I'm in! I managed to open the bonnet enough to connect my Optimate 111, with a little help from above mentioned midgets! Problem is there wasn't enough power to raise the window and lock the door, (start pack probably drained by flat battery) and car went into economy mode. I made up another lead to connect the tow sockets to my car battery and started the engine. This tricked the car into thinking the engine was running and after a few minutes it came out of economy mode the window lifted and I locked the car. Optimate 111 usually take several days to fully charge a flat battery so I'll need to be patient, hope I haven't killed the battery by running and leaving it flat!

Thanks for all your help.

Regards,
Clyde.

A brilliant bit of lateral thinking there.
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

Inside every old person is a young person wondering what the hell happened.

Tow hitch on a convertible  i'm glad you got access. I had to tow my neighbor this winter he managed to get himself trapped in his golf in a very similar situation, i wrapped a strap around one back wheel and pulled him back with both rear wheels locked ( electric parking brake) wasn't too hard.

So did you not try just pulling the door open past the seal when it unlocked with the key blade? This is how its meant to open with a flat battery.
