Citroen C5 Mk I original JBL amplifier.

Post by Carsten S »

Hi,
Does anyone know what it takes to retrofit the JBL-amplifier option to a Mk I? Servicenet only show the parts, no description available.
Google seems to let me down on this.

EDIT: On a sidenote, is it only the removable top that differs from a version with the large screen? Citroen service lists two seperate dashboards, it seems like a huge expense just for fitting a screen. This project could be fun;

Not for the light hearted - they are CAN enabled Amps with different wiring, modified speakers and of course the loom / connections so essentially a complete re-wire. Not really worth it ti be honest.

Thats a lot of effort just for an amp! Thought they were "normal" amps. The scrapyards have plenty of them for next to nothing. But as long as it's not plug n play, no way i want the hard work.

Thanks for info :)

There have been a few here (and I mean one or two) who have attempted this on their C5 X7s that was more or less replacing all the wiring, speakers and doing all the routing, taking the glovebox and trim out to get it mounted and wired - a bit of a job for not too much gain to be honest. It;s why they were an expensive option form new as they required special speakers and wiring for the uprated system as well as the amp, which then has to be configured in the BSI.

You could go for a different aftermarket amp that takes the existing outputs and amplifies these - and just update your speakers . wiring, but still a job to do.

The X7 is a lot never - I'm surprised a 2001 car would use a CAN enabled amplifier.

Yeah, I could fit a regular amp, but that is way to much work on an old car.

You are indeed correct, they are just 'normal' amps on the mk1 & mk2 apart from having non standard connectors. There is no multiplexed VAN or CAN connection to it whatsoever, Just a power supply and earth then the rest are just inputs & outputs to the speakers. Only on the Mk3 X7 model the amp is multiplexed.
I must say though of the hundred's of mk1 C5's I have worked on I have never actually seen a mk1 with the factory amplifier fitted, It certainly wasn't a popular option in the UK. Seen plenty on the Mk2's though with the JBL system which I must say is quite impressive. I didn't realise that JBL made the mk 1 system too?

There is a VAN connection Wheeler - certainly on the C5 MK IIs and 407s of the 2006 era anyway between the amplifier and the BSI. On later systems (X7) they are of course moreso.

Only the mk1 had a VAN network, The mk2 is Full CAN. On both the mk1 & 2 there is no multiplexed connection between audio amplifier & the multiplexed network. I could in theory wire the amplifier from a mk 2 C5 to a Ford Escort.

The 2008 onwards mk3 (X7) as you say is indeed multiplexed and is connected to the Comfort CAN.

The Diagram below is from a mk2 (Full CAN) C5. Apart from the speaker inputs & output there are only 3 other wires. An earth, a switch on signal from the radio & a power supply from a relay that is switched from (not powered from) a CAN+ supply.

Here's the same system on a 407 (2006): The Body VAN 2 connection is pin 7, so probably a CAN VAN system.

Yes that's a Bi VAN/CAN system that would also be found on a mk1 C5.
Wire XC2M is whats known as a VAN+ supply, this is just a 12v supply that is powered when the network is awake, almost like a switched feed, this is the equivalent of the CAN+ supply on the other diagram. If you wanted to wire this to another car this would just be substituted for an ignition live supply. The multiplexed data wires on this system always start with the number 9 and are in pairs. As you can see there are none connected to the amp, you can just see them on the handsfree unit on the right of your diagram.

The diagram below is from the MK1 C5 audio training manual and shows the electrical layout of the audio system, this too shows that the amp is connected by a wire connection rather than a multiplexed connection.
