2009 C5. New owner,some issues

Post by elcustardo »

So,

My poor old Picasso got taken out while parked up.
So a quick replacement was needed and I nabbed a 2009 C5 1.8 petrol.

All good but on the drive home it went into limp home and a depolution error has flagged up.
After a restart its drove fine on the motorway and A roads. seem a little hesitant pulling away from a set of lights though.
Fires up and idles fine.
OBD scanner gave error code p0170 fuel trim bank 1 (think Im cursed with this as my Picasso flagged this up before it got written off!)
Car has been sitting,so is it potentially an issue with the likes of the lambda from sitting?

second issue. The bonnet catch. It is totally broken it seems. Or at least the plastic handle is totally loose and can be pulled out on its cable after pulling the internal bonnet release.
Having never opened the c5 bonnet myself, would pulling on the cable connected to the plastic level pop it open?
Dont want to be yanking on the cable if its not going to open the bonnet.

Ive ordered a new external temp sensor as the car is showing sub zero temps. looking around it seems these need soldered in?

Sorry lots of questions.

Thanks

okay folks. Got the bonnet open with cable ties, swearing and some skin and blood.
So the short cable had come adrfit however I have no idea how its routed and if its loose because its stretched. Does anyone have an image of the routing?
Ill order a new one for safety as it looks like its been pulled on before and likely stretched.

The bonnet release (bonnet part) comes as a cable and a new plastic lift tab. I did mine one winter - post, diagram and a brief video here:

As for the temperature sensor - see my post here showing where to cut and join:

Ah I see. just goes in a curve. Theres a hole in the slam panel with a metal surround and I had wondered if that was part of it.
Temp sensor looks an easy enough fit.
Must admit I do like the C5. Had a mk1 years ago.
Had to buy in a hurry to be able to get to work (yay for being a 'key' worker but nothing involving life & death) so not my ideal model/condition.

Any idea of probable cause on the p0170 fuel trim bank 1 error code?
On the Picasso it was looking like it was likely canister electrovalve.
The car got a 30 mile or so drive coming home from purchase. I would normally go and give it a good long harder run but given the lock down i'm only going to work (5 miles) and local shops

Thanks

Unfortunately I don't have a lot on these engines - the EW7A 1.8 engine was not very popular (diesels were favoured) and was withdrawn from European sale from Jan 2011 as it was only a Euro 4 engine. This P0170 just comes back as Fuel injection: Malfunction - So not very helpful!, but could be any of the following: blocked intake, canister purge valve, fuel pressure, the injectors, or the O2 sensors as possibilities. But I would check the canister purge valve first to see if there are any vacuum leaks.

Make sure you also have the plastic engine cover - outside water can get in and sits in between the rocker covers - this can affect the coil pack / plugs.

Yeah think it will be my first swap out.
The Picasso had it buried under the wheel liner. On the C5 its right at the top of the engine, couldn't be any more accessible

That's not a PSA part code - but if you want the correct part numbers, I'll need to look this data up which is chargeable to the Forum - but if you make a min. £10 donation, this will cover you for up to 2 years for any future parts requests - details and links in the table below: Then just pop your VIN up and I'll be able to sort it.
A response to your question will require detailed vehicle information that requires you to have made a current contribution to the Forum.

Ok, that's great, thanks.

They call it a Vapor Absorber and is item (1). The PSA part number is: 150771. If you Google on 'Citroen 150771', that should bring some alternatives up for you.

The electrovalve (which I would check first) is item (2) and the part for that is: 16287G.

Many thanks. I cleaned the connections and looked over all pipes to the electrovalve. All seem in good nick. Car has FSH and only 62K miles. so under bonnet is very clean.
Bit of an enigma car. Dealer serviced in October with a new rack fitted in July but left with a broken bonnet release.
Though it could have broken from sitting and the mech being stiff. I bought as a trade in from a dealer but it has obvious signs of having been sat for a period of time

Once you get the new cable fitted - copious amounts of marine grease will help prevent it from seizing - mine went in the winter - the plastic is quire brittle and the cold was the last straw for it!

Just a quick check - are those two part numbers supposed to be different ?

Think its meant to be the 150771

No harm done as I went with the electrovalve as a first try.

Looks like it wasn't the 16287G Electrovalve :(
Think Im going to get the car out tomorrow after work and get it nice and hot.
Car runs fine with power. However there is a little hesitation at low revs pulling away sometimes
