Xantia MK II - LHM under rear carpet

Post by lancia58 »

Hi

I found today LHM under the left side of the front and rear carpet . I can't see any leak on the brake pedal. Can a leak from the doser reach the rear carpet ?

Thanks

Have a check under the car along where the hydraulic pipes travel from front to rear. I once went over some rubble that fell off a brick wall as I was driving past at speed and the impact was enough to rip a hole in the floor pan through to the carpet! If something like this has happened it may have split a pipe and the fluid may be coming in under pressure that way.

Either that or pull the carpets back and see where the oil is originating coming from.

If there has been a big leak under the dash (is the LHM on any of the peddles ? ....then the carpet foam can encourage LHM track back into the rear carpet foam by capillary action (oil does this, water does not as it soaks into the rubber foam), it will need to be a good leak however.

Hi

There is an LHM between the front left door and left fender (LHD car ). The top struts ( left and right ) leaked from the o-ring. I replaced both struts and the suspension cylinders ( left and right ) to new ones. I cleaned the LHM in the thought that it comes from the leaked struts but leak is still there. Any one can suggest the source for that leak ?

Have you checked above the brake/clutch peddles yet ?

Yes I checked - it was a bit wet a month ago - I cleaned it with a wiper and since then it is dry but I suspect it. If it is the doser leaking how it finds it way to the spot I marked in the picture ?

Thanks

Ok

Is it the same source ? If you remover the wing liner you will/should be able to see the source of that staining......

Try a dry paper wipe and check the bulkhead insulation (by pressing the paper on) for that being soaked....it must be coming from somewhere.

Hi,
I am no expert with Xantia's ( I was CX now C5 ) but I do remember a picture of a Xantia brake valve which was in some ways similar to that in a CX. My question is does it have a conventional brake master cylinder using brake fluid or does it derive braking pressure from the hydraulic system ( LHM ) and I suspect it does.

A common fault with brake vales in CX's is that the front rubber seal which also bears the pedal pressure fails (cracks) which allows the valve bypass LHM which normally would return to the LHM tank to leak out the front and onto the carpet and floor etc.

Fortunately these seals are available as a spare part and are fairly easy to fit. Cleaning the carpets in a CX can be done but not an easy job.

Hope the foregoing may help please advise.

If the brake doseur, this previous thread may help...

Relates to RHD, but likely similar.

Yes the Xantia (and XM) brake valve is identical to the CX, with the same failure mode.
