Boxer 2 TPS

Post by jgra1 »

hi all, whilst trying to get the van out of the barn for its mot yesterday, I lost any use of the accelerator (dead pedal) and caused the EML. subsequent gentle pressed of the pedal will extinguish the light and the revs will rise a little, then back to no throttle/revs and light on again. Having idle speed only, I managed to get it parked again and got my lexia on to it.

Planet reports
Accelerator pedal signal 2 Coherence fault, which repeats after a code clear; also an open-circuit flowmeter error seems to come up at the same time.

question : shall I just replace the pedal box and hope that is the obvious cause? I did remove it, open it, and one of the 4 tangs was not aligned with its track.. despite putting that back in place the issue continues?
the TPS has about 6 wires connected, and 4 tracks, with 2 pairs of 'tangs' aligned..

I am getting readings of 0%, up to about 10% and even saw 21% throttle open - but this number goes back to zero straight away.. I don't know if that is normal.. I would have thought the 'open' % would remain like that until you move the pedal somewhere else.

Finally, for no good reason I was looking at an inlet butterfly, vac operated. It's always open, sits between the Intercooler pipe and inlet manifold.. what is this part for? if open when idleing

thanks as always
J

It's a bit early, so data is minimal, but this is the air supply and I think you may be referring to the Air Doser:

yes that thing.. what is its job in life? I was surprised to see it basically always open at idle, but maybe it shuts and blocks the air inlet for pollution control under certain circumstances ?

thanks Marc, ordered a second hand pedal assembly. From that pic it looks like there isn't much about the accelerator system except the pedal and the ECU itself, I am praying it's the former!

will update post in a day or two..

a few mins of researching and I get this snippet below.. either way, the doser is not relevant to anything much :) - I was on some red herring there . as for why mine is open at shut off and idle, no idea.. no care :) bigger fish to fry in the world.

'I believe at idle speed they close, say, by half forcing greater egr recirc and then they slam-shut when you switch off to choke the engine of air so that it doesn't stop with that old Diesel 'shudder' due to high compression. Diesels don't have a throttle butterfly to vary the air inlet volume rather it is just a big hole where each intake stroke takes in the same amount of air regardless of the throttle position - as such they do shut-down with a bit of a shudder.'

the new pedal assembly didn't make any difference, but was cheap enough as a quick test..
the fact that the MAF is coming up with an error has got my attention. in my simple terms, the ECU knows one of the two items isn't playing ball, and is blaming both for it

if that fails, then I have to suspect the ECU really..

will update..
