LDS Tank

Post by Jetjockey »

Right, then on to the next job, finding out why there was a large quantity of hydraulic oil all over the top engine mount adjacent to the hydraulic reservoir! No sign of a leak or where it’s come from! Looks as if it’s sprayed from somewhere but where? I’ve steam cleaned the entire area and need to top up the reservoir. It’s a mystery!!
We’re talking almost a litre of oil I reckon!

has the car been on a lift with all four wheels hanging recently.
If it is placed back on it's wheels the system can't cope very well with the sudden flow of fluid back to the reservoir and can cause it to split. You may have been lucky and it has just sprayed from the cap.

If lifting with wheels hanging the cap should be removed to stop pressure destroying components.

I've split this off into a new topic.

Make sure it has not been overfilled.

It must be only be filled between the 'A' & 'B' marks whilst the car is on the lowest suspension setting.

And as Steve says, if it has been in the hands of an incompetent garage, they may not have been aware to raise the car up to highest suspension first and remove the LDS cap if it will be raised where the wheels will be left hanging.

Read this post and get some labels....

Interestingly enough.......

When a local tyre fitting garage changed all four tyres for me about 7 months ago they did indeed let all 4 wheels hang and did not remove the cap from the tank, or raise the cars suspension to its highest limit first!

I’m going to have to keep an eye on the area around the tank over the next weeks whilst I keep checking the adjacent area for leaking oil. Still not sure where it was coming from.

I had filled the reservoir to the correct level but it’s taken two litres of oil to fetch it back to that level. 😖
That’s some leak!

Print some of the labels off in my link above - you can put these with the locking wheel nut to ensure you remind yourself or the mechanics - most indies do not know about this, but some of the larger places like ATS (if they are on the ball and read the Head Office memos) do.

Regardless, I would never leave mine with anyone - I watch like a hawk - everything from the MOT to tyre replacements.
