That is the accumulator sphere.

Removing it can be tricky if it is tight. Drop the suspension to its lowest setting, and turn the engine off. There is, on the accumulator mechanism, a bolt with a raised head. Turn this bolt through 360 degrees (do NOT undo it completely, as there is a small sealing ball bearing under it, and removing the bolt will allow it to make a bid for freedom!). Once the whistling has stopped the hydraulics are no longer under pressure. You can now (carefully) remove the sphere, but it may well be tight (so you may need force, which is tricky considering how close it is to the radiator).

Just to be sure, either post a photo of the sphere in question, or post your VIN.
IIRC, both Accumulator sphere and Hydractive centre sphere are up front near radiator.

Ah, I didn't think of that!

However, as Froggys' signature suggests a Series 1 LX Xantia I might still be right.

In the Xantia range only VSX, Athena, Activa and Exclusive spec had hydractive. About 90% of Xantias didn't have it.

Froggy has an XUD9TE (1.9 TD) S1, so no Hydractive Suspension, so he's referring to the front Accumulator Sphere.

So Citroen part: 95666763 (400CM3 62 BARS) includes gasket,
or their cheaper equivalent part: E587001, includes seal.

The seals should always be replaced when the spheres come off, but I'd certainly get some new seals first of all.

The seal item number (6) in the above diagram is part number: 527215 (37.4 X 42 X 2.6). In the UK they are £5.88 each from Citroen inc. our 20% VAT, to give you an idea.

Normally (but NOT always) a replacement sphere will come with a replacement seal. The exception to this is the anti sink sphere (which uses a tube seal). Just make sure that the seal is properly seated before tightening up the sphere, otherwise you can pinch and split it (you can guess how I know this).

And (just in case no-one told you), the seal is fitted into the recess in the regulator body before fitting the sphere, not fitted to the sphere neck and screwed on.
