DS5 footwell lights issue/question

Post by MitchDS5 »

Hi all,
Having bought my DS5 used and never experiencing another ds5, I was blind to this issue...

Footwell lights. Are all models supposed to have them? Mine is the dstyle variant. I've just had a look and noticed that there is a light assembly on the driver side(doesn't switch on) but it is missing on the passenger side, I see the hole and the cable that would connect to it.

Is the light on the driver side broken or do they only work in pairs, and I need to get one for the passenger side? Are they all the same or do they have left/right variants?
Are they supposed to dim when switching off, like the rest of the interior lights?

Where can I get OEM lights to test/replace? I'm assuming they shouldn't be specific to the DS5 so should be reasonably cheap and readily available.

Thanks

According to the specifications as it left the factory - you have both Driver and Passenger Footwell Lighting.

Item 5 left and right below (Left Hand Drive is shown, so just reverse them).

My DS5 doesn't seem to have any footwell lights. 2015 Prestige model.

There were model changes between the 2013 and 2015 ranges - pop your VIN up and I'll see if this was one of the things that was changed.

Ok, so yes, the same as the previous diagram I uploaded and you have the same type according to your specifications.
Footwell Lights.PNG
So these should come on when the doors are opened along with the courtesy lights. Check the dimmer switch in the roof console to adjust the 7 levels of lighting or hold down for max brightness. If the footwell lights are not on then possibly the bulbs need replacing.

The fuses I believe are in the passenger glovebox, although if your left and right map reading lights work, then it won't be the fuses below:

F16 3A + ACC glovebox lighting - front under armrest - map reading lamp row 2 or CIELO
F17 3A + ACC map reading lamp row 1 - vanity mirrors - storage compartment lamps

The bulbs are a standard W5W - pick your own colour as these are widely available in just about most colours.

Cheers Marc, going to take a look tomorrow and check the things you've mentioned. Definitely no lights working at the moment. Absolutely love the car though.

Ok, lights come on when doors are opened, very feint and closer to the door than the image above suggests. I'll look to buy some brighter bulbs, the button in the top console doesn't seem to make any difference... Might need to try again at night time.
I was under the impression, from somewhere, that the footwells would be mood lights, similar to the door bins? Do you know if that is the case?

Ok, so the confusing part is that there were 2 versions depending on model / options (A) or (B)
AB
DS5 Lights A.PNG
DS5 Lights B.PNG
(1) Ambiance lamps (*).
(2) Front interior lamp.
(3) Map reading lamps (*).
(4) Ambient lamp (*).
(5) Front interior lamp (*).
(6) Map reading lamps (*).
On (A) you have 2 small Ambiance LED lamps and (B) 1 single Lamp.

This may be why there is a little confusion. Which system do you have?

Okay, so the ambient lights are only supposed to be subtle. They really only come on at night time with the main lights on to provide a very faint background light, so as not to be obtrusive and affect the driver. I know there is an adjustment for the rheostat lighting on the dashboard, usually controlled via one of the stalks which dims or increases these lights.

On my C5, I can adjust the ambient lighting through varying degrees using buttons on my instrument panel.

I got some replacement light assemblies from amazon. They seem to work fine but I'm sure that the original lights with proper bulbs (not LEDs) would be much nicer as they'd dim properly and probably less likely to flicker as much when the engine is started. Again, as I've never seen the original lights, it is hard to assess the quality of the replacement.

As a bonus, now I've got the first world problem of seeing dirt under the dashboard which would otherwise go unnoticed :D

In any case, thanks for the help!

That's your problem then.... they are NOT supposed to be LED lights fitted in these - I suspect somebody has replaced them previously and have not fitted correct bulbs, hence there is inusfficient power draw on the circuit, causing issues.

These are the correct bulbs:

If you want a different colour, you can get these filament bulbs in a variety of different colours quite cheaply.
w5w coulours.PNG
However, if you want LEDs for a brighter finish, make sure they have built in resistors. I fitted a load of these in my X7 interior - I was trying to get a cross between a warm interior - not too blue, not too red, but ended up with something akin to a pimpmobile! I will be changing the colours again maybe this summer, but these have resistors built in and you can see how they work without issue:

This is the LED bulb type:

I think you're misunderstanding the situation :)
My DS5 didn't have any functional lights in the front footwells.
I looked under the dash and found only one light assembly (driver side), which didn't work. I didn't bother taking it apart to check if there was a bulb in it.

Seeing as I'd have to get at least one new assembly, I looked around and didn't find anything other than "compatible" ones that come with LED lights in them.

So I bought a pair like these, which I think have the LED module built in (ie not really interchangeable with regular bulbs)
41flx5NNoYL.jpg
as you can see, those look very different to the original one (EDIT) which I've since taken apart and took this photo
original_assembly.jpg
I might try to get a normal bulb and see if my one original assembly is working, so that I can compare it with the new ones.
If I like it better, I might try to find an original assembly for the passenger side as well.
