C3 engine temp fault - stop engine help

Post by C3wilson »

Hi all, this is my first post so please excuse Me if i break any etiquette rules.
I have just acquired a 2011 citroen c3 1.4 hdi vtr. When i start the engine the car pings a warning up, engine temperature fault- stop engine. I then drive for a bit and it goes off. When i come to a junction and have to inch forward or idle, it pings up the same warning. It goes off a short time after setting of with normal driving speeds. I have changed the obvious thermostat housing and coolant temp sensor today and it has made no difference. There are no codes coming up on scanner. Can anyone tell me if it has another sensor somewhere on the head or any other advice as to what to check.
Thanks

You'll find that some generic scanners are unable to read the ECUs of the more modern engines, and especially the constructor-specific codes.

A warning like that will have triggered a fault code - even if temporary, and that will be stored in the BSI. You'll really need somebody with Diagbox to pull it off. If you can get that we may be able to help explain what she's not happy about.

Please pop your VIN up here (automatically masked from public view) and I'll be able to locate the sensor for you with a diagram.

At a guess, I would suggest that it is likely to be a corroded connector or a break in a wire going to the engine ECU. If the fault is reliably present at a cold start, then it should not be too difficult to track down, even by measuring some voltages in the absence of diagnostic equipment to read the live data.

Thanks for that diagram, the sensor no 2 i have already changed. I have not had time to investigate further but it has been suggested today that it may be the water pump, that is causing the fault as the light/fault only illuminates when engine is idle 10 seconds after acceleration it goes off and stays off while normal driving. They suggested that the coolant may not be being circulated fast enough due to impeller failure. Any thoughts on this?

I’d have to say it’s a possibility but not a common fault. My dealer actually asked me if I was sure I wanted the water pump doing when having the timing belt changed as he said they were very reliable and very rarely failed these days.

That’s not to say they won’t of course. If your timing belt is due maybe you could get that done at the same time as it will save on labour costs if not doing it yourself.

If you could determine if there is a stored specific fault code that would help troubleshoot.
