The tailgate came from an unrevealed, and unidentified donor vehicle from a County Durham scrapyard..and also Peter.N. did mention he had seen a Lagonda Rapide in Barwick's Scrapyard which may well have been in Sidcup.

"The most difficult task for Radgick and Carrosserie was the tailgate. “We were going to make it from scratch,” he says. “So I went to Pilkington to see about making a rear ’screen for it. They said: ‘We’ll do it. The first one will cost you £14,000, but after that they are £150 each.’”

In the end Dick Francis of Carrosserie went down to the scrapyard. “He took his tape and measured up loads of hatchbacks,” says Radgick. “Eventually he found one that was a pretty good fit.” Radgick is coy about which car donated its rear hatch and glass because he has a bet running with a friend – £20 says he can’t guess what it’s from. Francis took the whole top half of the hatchback and mated it to the back end of the original Rapide bootlid. Apart from the lack of chrome trim around the ’screen rubber it looks convincing and, being from a modern car, it has the advantage of gas struts, a heated ’screen, plus a rear wash/wipe"
Easy, it's a Mk3 Fiesta! Wonder if his mate has claimed yet?

Aye, my feelings indeed. If I find a car not worth repairing it's highly unlikely anyone else would bother (you seen my standards of too far gone?) and by the time it gets to the stage where I'm finished with it I've usually had the parts I'm likely to need or can resell from it leaving just the dross, shell/interior/wiring and maybe a dead engine/box plus 4 bald or torn tyres. If our local old-skool fella (PR Bibby at Knypersley) is going to make the trip over here in his sub 10mpg truck and relieve me of the eyesore I can't move myself then he's welcome to make a few beer tokens from whatever he sells or weighs.

2 old school places we use, he's the first & best IMO although little stock rotation (I could go there tomorrow and get Xantia, 405, 205, Sierra & Mk4/5 Escort bits 100%) but it's good for the same reasons, plus prices range from "nah I don't want owt for that" (Mirror switches) to "tenner do ya?" (Bosch VE pump/injectors/lines for 1.9TD plus Xantia airbag and ECU).

The other one is Northwich Metals, less old-school (only stacked 2 high not 5!) and you have to sign in/out, no large toolbags (thieves ruin everything). But there's more chance of modern stuff that's not already picked bare and decent turnover plus they fit partworns and sell runners if you really want something in particular you see. Prices there seems to be £20-25 per trip rather than being meaningfully related to what you have got.

Both places have seen their share of mickey taking and still stay true to the way things should be within reason, in return I feel it's only fair to declare every fuse/nut/bolt and clip we take.

Total agreement there too, although I try to remove all re-usable parts before sending to the yard, as you can see: :-D

that AML Rapide looks like a DB6 to me - but then I'd be hard pressed to ID a Mk 3 Fester, never mind its back window.

A yard in Sidcup, that made me sit up, is it still there, where?

If anyone spots a C15 in their wanderings round such establishments, do let me know as, assuming I ever get the dam' thing going again, will still be interested in stuff it needed when I bought it.

Issue No 2 from the mid sixties had adverts in for some notable dismantlers at that time, including JJ Barwick of Sidcup Motors.

Went to have a couple of tyres on the C5 this morning and behind the tyre fitting shed there was a tidy C15 van with moss on the roof sitting in the back row, no idea if it was just waiting for work or belonging to someone at the tyre place.

Thanks for the tip Gibbo, I'll give'm a ring - when I've got some idea of when I'd be able to get there.

THAT yard in Sidcup (well, actually on the by-pass - I think) is AZ Spares (or something like that) & is still there (or was, last winter) but the A7's gone: became too valuable I wouldn't wonder.

My local for the last 25 years, has been mentioned a couple of times is Bridges near creepycrawley - purported to have once been the biggest (by employee) yard in England I think.

I have seen it change over time. now parts of the yard are off limits at weekends, staff patrol more than they used to (I have been told that some of the gentleman patrons were damaging stock)

Its a slightly sad place now (it wasn't really a happy place to be sure)

possibly partly down to the 'white goods' that cars have become.

interestingly, I bought a 206 part recently on Ebay, and it came from them!
maybe online shopping has had an effect also. (why crawl around in the rain borrowing that 16mm spanner you didn't pack) when someone can just send a part to your door.

Does anyone remember Mad Burts? it was overseen by Bert, who was MAD! (well he wasn't, just a character really)

I used to visit Bridges' in Pease Pottage regularly in the 70s....90s.
It was pretty much the last surviving scrapyard in Sussex, and grew enormously.
Bill used to have a small 'historics' corner, where there were several pre-war and '50s relics. Newer stuff came and went, but he kept this corner going.

Thought I would treat myself to a scrapyard visit this afternoon, needed a new drivebelt tensioner for the BB Micra K12.

A couple of the yards had no K12's in but the biggest had a row of them as it turns out, with the added bonus of no other cars being on top of them. First one had aircon, but the next 5 were all possibilities and access was easy for dismantling because none had the grills or front valance on. Some were inbetter order than others and you cant beat a decent oil leak in that region to aid dismantling. Couple of the tensioner screws were severely rusted and sheared, but the one with the oil leak was fine so success. The guy only wanted a fiver, but I gave hime £10 which is what I was expecting and I got what I wanted.

I did suceed in getting myself locked into the scrapyard as it was after 4.00 pm when I emerged from the row of K12's with a couple of pulleys to find the gates locked. There are about 3 interconnected yards and couldnt find anyone to let me out. In one of the yards was a very large Alsation in a cage so I exited that one fairly rapidly just in case they had opened it up for the dogs to do their security stuff.

I left my tools and the pulleys at the gate and wandered about doing a bit more shouting before resorting to planning my exit over the gate and the barbed wire by piling up tyres. Yes I think I would have had to revise that plan a bit. Thankfullly the guy came back but just because he caught sight of my tools by the gate. As in Enid Blyton novels "The Falcon goes to the Scrapyard" ended with "All's well that ends well"

Treated myself to another visit to the scrapyard this morning. Following my nearly getting locked in with a large Alsation last visit, I decided against an afternoon visit.

I knew there were a series of Micra K12's in a row, so I went in search of a match of a few airbag (SRS) system components. It was useful research because each version of the car has a different level of equipment. Mine is the very basic Drivers and Passenger Air Bags, Driver and Passengers Pre-Tensioners in the seat belts, and a crash zone sensor at the front. Most other models have side-air bags in the front seats, and others curtain airbags.

So I found a match, and took away an Airbag (SRS) ECU, side satellite sensors left and right (my car has the wiring loom for these but not the sensors themselves) and two termnals for the side airbag wiring loom (which is present in my Micra but not terminated correctly-the car has no side airbags)

I only had a £20 so needed a bit of trim for the BB Corsa so got that thrown in too for £20 all told. Went away quite happy with that.

In the course of wandering about did come across a scrapyard rarity.....A Xantia at the bottom of the crush pile, and a C5 awaiting a similar fate

I think my experience with the Micra last week made up my mind to send the Vauxhall Corsa I had on SORN off to be recycled.

When MICRA had the Airbag problem, there was always the chance that a perfectly good car due to an unfixable or uneconomically fixable airbag-light-on problem would be heading for recycling itself. Having sorted that and another 12 months MOT on it, the 100% fixable CORSA was likely not to be coming off SORN in the forseeable so it went off today on the back of the ATF's transporter.

It has served its purpose, its been a good and reliable car, and even had a holiday in Cornwall :-D and but it was time for it to go. I had sorted most of the MOT failure problems, and was just about MOT ready so off it goes to the scrappy with a new exhaust, new brake flexi's, all metal brake pipes replaced in the coppery stuff, new disks and pads, new rear shoes.......and I just bought a bit of new trim for it to tidy it up the other week.
