Crankshaft Pulley came off

Post by Andy Wilson »

Hi I was driving the car a peugeot 207 1.4 petrol engine 2008 and there was a lound clunk and I pulled over and found the auxillary belt on the roadside. Got towed home and looked at the problem and the crankshaft pulley was missing.! It has damaged the crankshaft pulley hub, it has sheared off most of the collar that centres the pulley. I have obtained all the necessary parts but I have been told that I have to lock everything up ie the camshaft under the rocker cover and lock the flywheel. Is this the case as I have also been told I can put the car in gear with foot on the brake and remove the crankshaft pulley bolt to replace the damaged hub and fit a new crankshaft pulley by this method. Who is correct?

Any help would be appreciated

Hi, and :welc: to the forum.

It should not be long before somebody who is highly knowledgeable about engines will be able to advise you. However, to make things easier for them could you please post up your VIN here (which will, for security reasons, be automatically be obscured so only Forum staff can read it). Then a Moderator can look up exactly what engine you have, and go from there.

You should never use the brake. Any anticlockwise motion on the crankshaft pully will 'de-set' the timing. It should always be locked in place to stop movement. I suspect if the hub is missing altogether, you'll have to get it timed anyway.

This is the correct procedure for changing the Aux belt and I have included the full guide for removing and refitting for completeness.

Identification of parts:
207 Aux A.PNG
(1) Dynamic tensioner.
(2) Alternator.
(3) Ancillary drive belt (/).
(4) Air conditioning compressor.
(5) Ancillary drive pulley on crankshaft.
(6) Crankshaft pulley hub fixing bolt.
(7) Coolant pump drive friction wheel.
(8) Water pump pulley.
Removing

Caution!
  • No anticlockwise rotation action must be applied by means of the crankshaft pulley hub fixing bolt (6) (Risk of de-setting the timing).
  • Mark the direction of rotation of the elastic auxiliary drive belt if it is to be reused.

207 Aux B.PNG
207 Aux C.PNG
Turn the dynamic tensioner (1) clockwise
until the notch "a" is aligned with the pin "b",
using a 21/23 mm counter-offset spanner.

Press on the pin "b" to the stop, release:
  • The 21/23 mm counter-offset spanner
  • The peg ["b"]
"c" Position maintaining pin.
"d" Friction wheel unlocking position notch (Operating mode).
"e" Friction wheel locking position.
"f" Tab.
207 Aux D.PNG
Pull on the tab "f" until the pin "c" is aligned with the notch "d".
Raise the tab "f" until the notch "d" engages on the pin "c"; Release the tab "f" for immobilisation to keep the coolant pump inlet friction wheel (7) unlocked.
Remove the accessories drive belt (3).

Caution: Check that the roller of the dynamic tensioner (1) and the coolant pump drive friction wheel (7) rotate freely (Absence of play and points of resistance).
Refitting

CAUTION: When reusing the belt, refit it in accordance with the direction of rotation marked on removal.

Fit the ancillary drive belt, starting with the crankshaft pulley (5).
Release the coolant pump inlet friction wheel (7) by pulling the tab "f".
Release the tab "f".
Reposition the tab "f" in its location.
Act on the dynamic tensioner (1) so that the pin "b" returns to its initial position ; Using a 21/23 mm counter-offset spanner.

N.B. : Check that the belt is correctly fitted in the grooves of the different pulleys.
N.B. : Check that the tab "f" is positioned correctly in its location.

Thats great but I need to know the procedure for replacing the hub that the crankshaft pulley attaches to as it was damaged. The timing is fine. So I need to know how to remove it and re fit a new hub.

Thanks in advance.

You need to lock the flywheel with one of these then you can undo the pulley bolt with a good long bar and socket, once the bolt is out the hub should come off without too much difficulty, as has been said don't turn the engine over backwards.

Thanks for all your help. Do I not have to remove the rocker cover and clamp the camshaft???

You would need to lock the camshaft(s) if the timing belt is removed as part of the operation, but I assume that you do not need to disturb the timing belt pulley in this case.

I think this might be a bit more involved that it looks.... this engine has a timing chain rather than belt. Here's the diagram for the crankshaft:
Crankshaft.JPG
You can never quite tell from these diagrams, but it looks to me like the chain pinions are running on the hub, and the bottom oil seal is around the hub - in which case this is going to need to the timing chain stripping off to change it.... :?

Yes, that looks more difficult, that diagram does not indicate whether the lower timing sprockets are keyed to the crank, or the hub or neither.

I think that it is necessary to check the instructions for timing chain replacement to get some more details/

Here it is in all its g(l)ory!

Hub removal at 9:30
Hub off showing the sprockets fitting on it at 19:00
Replacement of the hub at 21:00

So, it will be necessary to time it up, and release the tension on the chain at least. I found the procedure for the chain replacement, but I could hardly understand it! http://replace-timing-belt.com/how-to-r ... -vti-2010/
