EGR-related error codes

Post by Zazula »

Hello everyone, I have a 206SW (12/2005) carrying the DV4TD 1.4HDi engine 8HZ, Diesel EDC 16C34, 50.0 kW.
Due to the engine warning light going on, combined with as sense of starvation when revving up, and eventual instances of going into 'safe mode', I got my EDC readings.
The reading was performed by Bosch ESI[tronic] 2.0 v.13.1.3641 and resulted in the following three error codes having been registered: P2413, P3008, P0405.
Does anyone have a suggestion for the proper troubleshooting procedure in this case? Or a resource where I may find related advice?
Many thanks in advance!

Pop your VIN up as I will need to run those codes against your specific ECU I appreciate you have provided ECU type, but I need the VIN to get full specs.

Ok, so can't help with the P3008 as it's not listed against the ECU, but as for the others:

P2143
Control fault of the electric EGR valve: Open circuit
Symptoms:Lack of Power, Noise when cold.
Downgrade Mode: The engine management ECU stops the EGR regulation (*) - The electric EGR valve auto-programming operations are no longer carried out.
(*) The Diagnostic tool will report:
  • Electric EGR valve control OCR: 0 %
  • Position repeat: 0 %
Contitions for Fault Returning:When the solenoid valve is controlled: The fault codes are returned immediately in the engine management ECU (If short circuits or open circuits are present).
Suspect Areas: Battery, Electrical harness, Exhaust gas recycling valve.

P0405
Electric EGR valve repeat signal fault: Copy voltage too low
Symptoms:Switching on of the diagnostic warning light, Noise when cold
Downgrade Mode:The engine ECU cuts the regulating of the EGR (*)
The electric EGR valve auto-programming operations are no longer carried out
(*) The Diagnostic tool will report:
  • Electric EGR valve control OCR: 0 %
  • Position repeat: 0 %
Contitions for Fault Returning:
When the valve is controlled: The fault codes are returned immediately in the engine management ECU
The diagnostic warning light only comes on and switches off after 3 engine starting cycles (**)
(**)1 Starting cycles:
  • Engine start
  • Engine cut-off
  • Wait for the instrument panel to switch off
Suspect Areas: Engine ECU 5V shared supply, Electrical harness, Electric exhaust gas recycling valve.

Thank you very much, GiveMeABreak!

Regarding error code P3008, the results sheet stated: Mass Air Flow Sensor — Signal implausible.

So, it can be either the electrical harness or the EGR valve? Is there a procedure for checking the EGR in terms of correct operation? Or I'll just have to replace it, since this condition is very persistent?

It would be worth checking the 5V supply to the sensors, as this could cause multiple apparent faults.

Start with the easy things first like the electrical supply to the EGR valve: P2143 indicates the fault is 'Open Circuit', so look at the last row in the table for the Open Circuit check. 1320 is the Engine ECU, specifically the 48 pin black connector, Pin marked 'A4'. 1253 is the EGR, - Pin 2 shows the wire 'B' to check.
206 EGR Check.PNG
Conditions under which the fault appearsConditions for checkingChecks to be made
Short Circuit to positive:- Engine running: Short circuit to positive on terminal(s) A4 of connector 48V.NRIgnition on, Control unit disconnected, EGR solenoid valve disconnected, Check :- No voltage on terminal A4 of ECU 1320
Short Circuit to earth:- Engine running: Short circuit to earth terminal(s) A4 of connector 48V.NRIgnition off, Control unit disconnected, EGR solenoid valve disconnected, Check :- No earth at terminal(s) A4 on the 48V.NR connector
Open Circuit:- Engine running: Open circuit on terminal(s) A4 (48V.NR)Ignition off, Control unit disconnected, EGR solenoid valve disconnected, Check :- Continuity and insulation of wire B

The wire-B check went okay; no findings.

Be sure to examine the pins closely - sometimes the pin can settle back in the plug and lose contact.

Sorry it took me a while, but I was on the road.
As far as the plug is concerned, the pins are firm.

Btw in today's trip the car fell into 'safe mode'; max rpm it allows is 2900. Moreover, it exhibits higher temps (i.e., while typically it won't go over 90 °C, now it reached 110 °C quite a few times) and higher fuel consumption.
