Citroen Xsara - Heater Blower NOT WORKING
Hi,
I have had an issue with the heater blower on my Citroen Xsara 2003 intermittently for the past year. It started off by not working at all, and the "solution" was to wiggle the key until it kicked in again, this problem looked identical to the video here -
This happened again and I managed to get it to work by wiggling the key again. This week it has stopped working again and with numerous attempts to wiggle the key in the ignition, the heater blower does not work.
I have read that it can be the ignition switch cable that is faulty and tonight I have tested the 4 wires using a continuity test on a multimeter and they seem to work ok. This is a photo of the connector at the rear of the ignition barrel below:
The plastic surrounding the Y shape looks damaged, will this have an impact on the operation of the heater blower?
The two other ends to the ignition switch cable are below, and these look ok:
I have replaced the heater blower transistor in the past as this is a common fault. When the car is turned over the heater blower fan sounds like it wants to start but it doesn't kick in, this previsouly happened and started to work with the key wiggle temporary fix.
If it isn't the ignition switch cable it could be the fuse or blower motor? I was hoping someone can advise where to go with this?
Thanks
Mike

The continuity might be ok but the switch may not be able to take it under the heavy load of the blower motor. Try bypassing the switch.

We need a wiring diagram to proceed.
Re: Citroen Xsara - Heater Blower NOT WORKING
Hi,
Without a wiring diagram and help from the community I was thinking of trying the following:
1. Check the fuse, not sure where this is located - therefore I will have to check all of them
2. Test the voltage across the blower when the ignition and fan are on, I changed the resistor 2 years ago when the fan was stuck on maximum.
3. Run a wire from the battery direct to the blower to test if it works
4 Try to locate a replacement ignition switch cable, all of the cables on eBay are for the Picasso and not the Xsara struggling to find one atm.
Is there anything I am missing here? What part of the ignition cable switch typically fails, I was hoping it was a break in the cable?
Thanks
Mike

I’ll need a VIN from you to get the correct wiring diagram. Which fuse are you referring too specifically?

Hi Marc,
I will PM you the VIN now.
I was thinking the fuse to the blower motor. The air con switch and inside/outside switch work - and I'm not sure if these are on the same fuse as the blower.
There are no other issues with the electrics.
Thanks
Mike

Re: Citroen Xsara - Heater Blower NOT WORKING
I have just dropped the fan and performed the results from the multimeter test are on the photo below.
I'm not sure which wire should be providing the power to the blower, I would have thought it was the red cable but the results show it is the thin orange cable.
Does this mean the blower gets power and therefore the ignition switch cable is ok?
Thanks
Mike

Ok, been out for a bit - I'm having a look now...
Right so the Air Conditioning Blower Fuse is in the Passenger Fusebox (BH28), fuse F18, 40A.
Here are 2 diagrams for your Xsara II, TU5JP4 Injection. You have 'Regular Air Conditioning' and an ANC Control Box (BSI) with Comm 2000, as opposed to a straight BSI setup.
Electrical Equipment Codes can be found on our Wiki here:

Hi Marc,
Thanks for diagrams and information.
I will try to glean something from these. I guess the air conditioning diagram includes the blower unit - now it's time to find it.
Thanks

Re: Citroen Xsara - Heater Blower NOT WORKING
Mike, the Blower Control Module is 8045 - BUT only if separate from the actual blower motor itself - some are integrated onto the blower motors.

Re: Citroen Xsara - Heater Blower NOT WORKING
I think the cable in my photo (orange, black, yellow, red wires) is the cable going into 8045.
I'm not sure if there is anything else to test if the results above show that 12v is going to the motor.

Yes that is correct:
Pin 1 is Orange
Pin 2 Black
Pin 3 Yellow
Pin 4 Red

Pin 2 Black
Pin 3 Yellow
Pin 4 Red

Re: Citroen Xsara - Heater Blower NOT WORKING
Hi Marc,
Thanks for your time and patience.
I think the fundamental test is to determine if the fan motor works.
The 4 pin plug in my photo above shows (Orange, Black, Yellow, and Red). If I run a cable from the battery to the motor, battery positive to Red (4) and battery negative to Black (2), the motor should kick in? As the above circuit removes the switches etc will this work? The moto tests on youtube have 2 pins and not 4?
Thanks again
Mike

Re: Citroen Xsara - Heater Blower NOT WORKING
Test 2 results.
i have ran a cable form the battery and connectd it to the two relelvant pins at location A - nothing happened.
I connected the cable form the battery to the two pins at location B and C - the fan kicked in and only stopped when I removed the live feed. I connected the live feed again but nothing happened.
As this removes the switched and the ignition cable could the fan be faulty? Should the fan operate when pins at location B and C are connected?
Thanks
Mike
