Xsara Picasso Idling

Post by Vuk1987 »

I'm sorry for writing off topic, but I didn't want to start a new one. I have minor issues when idling my Xsara Picasso 1.6 16V petrol engine ( I think it's NFU engine series ). I doesn't turn off normally, but when my wife (she is a beginner driver ) presses the gas pedal harder and then releases it the car turns off. Then it turns off on idle until I give it a little ride, then its all fine again. I need help locating ICV, so I can give it a try by cleaning it.
And yeah, if anyone has any recommendations of where could I get some car schematics (software, pdf manual, printed manual ) in order to locate components easily, I would appreciate it.

It's not off topic, but doesn't belong on the XM Thread, so I have moved your post into a new Topic.

Can you clarify your post as it doesn't quite make sense - the bit in bold.
...presses the gas pedal harder and then releases it the car turns off. Then it turns off on idle until I give it a little ride, then its all fine again
You'll have to search for or purchase manuals, we don't provide these, but we do have some free mechanics guides, of which there are several for the Xsara Picasso:

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=61218

We can help with parts diagrams, but you'll need to provide your VIN and specify the part you are looking for.

Also, I'm not sure what you mean by an "ICV"? Maybe it has has been lost in translation?

what year and engine?? i have some info but not much. Look on here and there may well be a system diagram to show whats there, but not where it is on the car.....i'm still trying to find the double relay and inertia switch !

check the basics like the main earth lead from the body to the engine as on pug 306's they can break due to engine movement and cause problems......

admin are brilliant with exact info and diagrams etc., extremely helpful.

I friend has a 1.6 and that misbehaved, needed 2 new exhaust lambdas and the idle stepper motor, the thread had gone in that.

First, thank you for the handbook.
What I meant was that car turns of on itself when idle, so I have to keep gas pedal pressed in order to keep him running on idle. When I drive for a few minutes (1st gear, start, 2nd gear, 3rd gear, driving 2 minutes ... ) and then idle again, everything is fine, it doesn't turn off on idle, but if one would press the gas pedal when idling (no movement, clutch pressed or neutral gear ) and then releases it, the problem would most often appear again. By ICV I meant "idle control valve" but I see that you are using the term "idle stepper motor" . To be honest, I don't even know what kind of idle regulation this car has, since I've bought it half a year ago. My old Opel Vectra (Cavalier MK3 in the UK) just had a motorized butterfly valve (literal translation from Serbian language).
My VIN is VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]
Engine number is: NFU10FX6PPSA3110165
Picassodad year is 2006, and thank you for the advice.

I've heard of a similar problem and changing the idle stepper hasn't made any difference.

I did come across this little bit of advice which seems to have worked for several owners, so won't cost anything to try!
  • Start with engine off
  • Turn key so car on but not engine...leave for 10 seconds
  • Turn off for 10 seconds
  • Turn on again (not engine) this time with foot fully on gas for 10 secs
  • Turn off for 10 seconds
  • Start engine with foot fully on gas for 2 seconds then release foot...
Then it should run fine....resets what it needs to.

Unfortunatley it didn’t work. So, if anyone would know the location of an idle stepper motor I’d apreciate if he could share it with me. I want to give it a try by cleaning it

Turned out it was elecronic throttle control device , motor to be specific. I went to repair shop and they’ve replaced it. I’m mad because I couldn’t figure out it was the problem. I surely would have try to fix it.

I've only just had time to see your last posts - but glad you have it sorted now. Was it the accelerator potentiometer they replaced?:
