407 radiator

Post by moizeau »

Hi all, just had to be recovered, I'm at home but the car is at a depot 40 miles away so I can't check anything. Put my foot down to overtake, heard a bang, sudden loss of power. Cruising at 50 mph all seemed good. Checked for warning lights, temps etc., all fine. Got to the station to pick my son up and coolant was dripping heavily from the rad. Then I noticed the oily pipe that bypasses the IC had come off. That explains loss of power, however, when it came off the jubilee clip hit the rad and pierced it. Just looked up rads and they seem to be specific depending on auto or manual. The part number I find on SB is 1330j8 and most of the ones for sale are 1330j7. It appears the j8 is 557x380x27 and the j7 is 549x380x16. Is this the case as I would like to get one in time for the car's return, but as I said, I can't measure it because it's locked in a compound until monday.
I'm hoping that the pipe came off gradually over time because it wasn't secured properly. If not there may be a restriction I suppose, any thoughts would be welcomed.
Thanks
Pete

Wow! that's quite scary. So the boost pressure blew the pipe off and in the process flung the jubilee clip into the rad with enough force to bust it?

Yep, I might just hide in cotton wool for a couple of weeks, my place in the UK overflowed the sewage outside the house last week, I am now waiting for the third? I can't even check why it did this due to the car being locked away, miles away. I'm hoping hadn't secured it properly during it's hiccuping episode?

1330J8 was the original part Pete. It has now been replaced by 1330T1, and yes they are all different.

Sorry I don't have the dimensions listed as PSA don't provide it for the radiators - assuming the part numbers will be sufficient! :-D

Just ordered one, thanks again, all the rads with that part number were showing the same dimensions, so should be good.

You've already ordered, but worth remembering that Mister Auto (PSA owned) list dimensions for all their choice of rads for a particular model.

Marc, the condenser was already knackered, I have a new one waiting to be fitted,, at least the two can be done in one hit.
Chris, I ordered it from piecesauto24, they also list all dimensions and I find them a bit cheaper than misterauto, I checked all the j8 references and they were all the same apart from the width which varied by 1mm. I've also paid the extra 4€ for the free return, no questions asked.
Just need to get the car back monday to see why the pipe came off? Might secure the pipe with a bit of wire so if it does come off it can't get the the rad. It must have been doing a regen to blow the bypass pipe off. If there was a blockage I would have expected it to have blown the other off long ago.

Got the car back this morning, still waiting for the rad to arrive, so can't start it (apart from the 20 metres to get in on the drive). First thing to check is that the 2 air mixers are working, but I can't at the moment because I need to start the engine to give a vacuum. I'm still puzzled as to why the pipe got blown off. I really don't want it to stuff another rad. I counted the screw turns to undo the jube clip and then re-tighten in order to re-fit the pipe, 5 1/2 to undo then 6 to re-tighten? So it would seem as if it was fitted correctly unless it wasn't over the flange properly? If there was enough pressure to force the pipe off I would guess it would have done it before when it had the hiccups?
A question for those with the single butterfly (without B or the bypass pipe). When the doser A closes where does the turbo pressured air go, and does it then just run via the egr?

Or does it only partially close?
Any knowledge offered, gratefully received.

The front of the car is now removed, along with rad and condenser, managed to get the AC pipes of the condenser without breaking anything. While I'm in there, would it be worth flushing the intercooler, if yes with what, petrol and then leave in the sun? I'm also going to be cleaning out the pipework to the dosers. Bank Holiday here so I'm not expecting the rad 'til Monday, so I've got a couple of days to do some preventative maintenance, anything else worth doing?
Cheers

From my (extensive) research, I can find no evidence that the single air doser (Delphi) ever closes apart from to choke the engine at shutdown.

If I was you I’d remove the little vac pipes from the double air doser and block them. They appear to be the source of a lot of issues on your car.

Very interesting Elis.
That's a lot of manufacturing expense for diddly? I can get my head round the Siemens system because it bypasses the IC to assist regen. So in effect, you could remove the butterfly from the body (or in my case both), leave everything else in place so the car thinks it's doing as it's told, happy ever after...
