Did come across this little film from Pathe...a fun day trip over to France with scooters and no helmets!

And another car transport method that's into the same category is the Air-ferry from Lydd Airfield in Kent to Le Touquet on the French coast. In the middle 50's I used to watch them flying over Dungeness.

The little scooter escapade was on Silver City Airways flying out of Lympne Aerodrome to Le Touquet. They moved their air-ferry operation to Lydd in the mid 50's

And no luggage - except for their bathing costumes, it seems. Interesting to hear the fare was "Just a fiver". In 1952 I'd just started teaching in London on a salary of £850 per year. That's the equivalent of £16 per week.

I never wore a helmet, never occurred to me, and I came off it a few times. I rode it to Wolverhampton from Kent to see my uncle, seized up on the way, not enough oil in the petrol, filled it up by which time it had cooled down and I was on my way again.

I also remember Silver City airways, in fact when on the south coast a few years later I still expected it to be there - but it wasn't. :(

Random vintage stuff dotted about coffee shops
n falcon own work
n falcon own work
So there's random old LP's like Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, an old record player, and a long forgotten game with Alan Whicker's mug on it!

Oh, and at least one track from that album is going on the Pickled Egg Jukebox tonight!

There's no escaping Alan Whicker! He must have had a hand in scripting that Vespa video...
I had one, too (Vespa, that is): a 1959 125cc, bought from a cousin for a tenner in 1964. It used to eat clutch cables and the odd clutch. Candle-power headlight.

The Platform Ticket

Image

...and other Station visit essentials like

The chocolate vending machine with the little drawers and inevitably "Dairy Crunch"

This type of thing, although these are from Preston Bus Station in the early 1970's

Image

The Chrome Cigarette Vending Machine although that one looks a bit worse for wear, did add a bit of desirability for want of a better word to the product within.

There were apparently for 1d Oxo Chocolate bars, (not in my memory) and here's the evidence. Delicious and sustaining who could want for more? :-D

Anyone remember these?
RalilwayStationEmbossingMachine.jpg
Used to have fun with one on Ealing Broadway station.
Chugged out c.1/2" aluminium strip, not unlike an old Dymo machine.

Yes, good find Chris another part of the "Station Experience".....sure there were crush a penny type things as well.

Oh yes, there was one on Bromley South station which I would print something on if I had anything left out of my 1/6d pocket money.

I remember platform tickets, although there isn't a station at Sidmouth now, don't remember the OXO chocolate though.

I do remember the vending machines, plaftorm tickets and the label-making gizmo but not Oxo chocolate.

Filling Stations, Old filling Stations, in fact the oldest filling station in the UK still selling petrol and diesel

..and where is it

Turnastone in Herefordshire...….only the most determined would ever find it, and I can confirm that there is a decent whiff of petrol fumes from the decrepit looking pumps and fresh padlocks on each pump handle.

strewth, that's quite a blast from the past isn't it, you couldn't even replicate it at Blists Hill or Beamish; the public 'd just think it weird :)

Is there room to park a car beside the wall in the foreground for the purpose of filling up?

Strange: Blists Hill, Black Country Living Museum and Beamish; all much the same thing, all B's
