note that for anyone else with old slides or negatives...

...some Printer/Scanner combi's you can get a 'Slide / Negative' attachment for use with the Scanner.

Our Epson RX620 is one such. I've successfully scanned lots of 35mm neg's using it and will one day get around to scanning the few slides that are in the loft.

Peter.N. wrote: 09 Jun 2018, 21:29 I recently got my Rank Aldis projector from the loft and set it up on the dining room table, gave the wall a wash down, so I could project some of the several hundred 35mm slides on to it, unfortunately the bulb had failed, got a replacement from ebay for £3.00 something.

Yes our slide shows at home always finished with dire warnings not to move the projector until the bulb had cooled down!

I've just recently given away my Epson 1250 Perfection scanner with slide and negative adapter, had no further use for it having copied all my dad's old stuff to hard copy and to disk.

In the 1950-60s it was all 35mm slides with me. A few years ago I started copying some of them by placing the slide on a diffused lighted screen then using a digital camera in close up to take a picture of it. It worked quite well. This cricket team was our local primary team but all these lads will now be in their late sixties and be OAP's.

And this is one of Guildford Cathedral taken in the late 1950's.

Meanwhile - anyone remember these. This is a Grundig TK1 portable tape recorder which used 3" reels of tape. Domestic models were as big as suitcases and used two 7" tape reels.

The second one was done by throwing your original photo into Picasa, and re-doing the colour balance - Use the Neutral Colour Picker on a bit of white (shirt), and click. Done.
Other re-rouch packages available...

What a wonderful shot of Guildford cathedral, under construction. A massive brick-built structure.
Fabulous photo!

What a great improvement to the picture!..................... Regarding Guildford Cathedral - I remember travelling from Exeter to Waterloo in the late 40's/early 50's as I travelled on army leave from Yeovil by train. It was fascinating to see the brickwork going ever higher, accompanied by scaffolding. Not until I was finished with the army and was driving did I find out what they were building.

We lived in Godalming, and later in Milford (Mousehill) for a good while, so it was on our doorstep.

small world, I used to go out with a lass who lived in Compton, near Godalming
(the one near Watts Gallery & Chapel, there are two Comptons in that area)

I haven't been for a good few years, but it used to be a lovely lunch stop off the A3 if anyone's passing, less than 5mins diversion

My parents lived in Ealing for almost all of their lives, finally moving in with us in Milford in 1998. They loved the area, and after they had both passed away the family scattered their ashes together in the grounds of the tiny Watts Chapel. An extraordinarily lovely place.
Small world indeed.

Anyone remember/actually use "Motorail" or its equivalent?

Posted up a couple of "cars on a train" pictures on POTD and posed the question do people take their cars on trains anymore? (yes apart from Eurostar)

Was struggling to come up with what the service was called in the UK then came across this poster

Image

Of Course there was always the continental service "Let British Railways do the long hard Drive"

Exccelent blog on such things here http://retours.eu/en/42-car-sleeper-expresses/

I believe on one of the French motorail services it's essential that your car doesn't get put on the top deck as the scroats like to drop large lumps of concrete on them from the bridges the trains pass under
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

Just found an interesting account of the Sutton Coldfield to Stirling Sleeper Service which has a bit of info about motorail in general and sidetracks onto a bit of analysis of the location of the photo of the victor loading up on POTD.

I'm told that there aren't any motorail services operating in the UK. The service from Calais to the south of France ended in 2010 but continued from Paris to the Med however, even that ended at the end of last year.

Yes its well in the "All our Yesterdays" category John.

No-one has as yet has come forward as having ever used Motorail or its equivalent in the past?

I lap up the language and the art of the posters advertising the service.

And another car transport method that's into the same category is the Air-ferry from Lydd Airfield in Kent to Le Touquet on the French coast. In the middle 50's I used to watch them flying over Dungeness. See:
