2005 C5 2,0i 16v Weekend Aut, AT oil chance

Post by Larsen »

Hi

I think the AT needs some new oil.

286.000 km, and i don't know the maintenace standard of the previous owners. I have driven aprox 11.000 km since i bought it last year.

C5 2,0i 16v Petrol, Weekend Aut 2005 - Chasis no. VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]. I beleave the AT is a AL4.

When i start driving all shifts up and down are smooth, where 2>3>4 are the smoothiest. When the engine reach normal working temperature, it's starts getting much harder shifts from 1>2.

Shifts 2>3>4 are still smooth.

I'm not used to working with cars, engines or gearboxes, so if somebody could publish a how-to, and which tools to use, I would be very greatefull.

I bought 8 liters of mobil LT71141 hoping it's enough to 2 changes.

Thank you

/lars

This document does not address changing the oil, but it does give a procedure for checking the level and topping up: https://frenchcarforum.co.uk/TechDocs/A ... ration.pdf

This is the drain and refill procedure for you on the AL4 for the C5 MK II:

Notes:
  • The gearbox must be drained when the oil is hot (60 °C minimum), to eliminate the impurities suspended in the oil.
  • The oil change is partial, since the converter cannot be totally drained.

Topping up Cylinder Tool (-) 0341.
Drain & Refill
C5 MK II AL4 Oil B.PNG
C5 MK II AL4 Oil C.PNG
Remove:
  • The top-up plug ( 2)
  • The oil overflow and drainage plug (1)
(Approx. 3lt of oil should flow out)
Refilling
  • Fit the drain overflow plug (1)Tighten to 0,9 ± 0,2 daN.m.
  • Remove the filler plug (3).
  • Use tool [1].
  • Dry gearbox oil capacity : EW10 engine(5,85 litres).
  • Oil remaining after draining: 3 litres(approx.).
  • Quantity of oil to be replaced: 3 litres(approx.).
  • Refit the filler plug ( 3)(equipped with a new seal)Tighten to 2,4 daN.m.
  • Initialise the used oil counter (follow the diagnostic tool procedure).
Check the Oil Level

Prior Conditions :
  • Vehicle level
  • Check that the gearbox is not in downgrade mode
  • Remove the filler plug (3)
  • Add 0,5 additional litres of oil in the gearbox
  • Apply the brakes firmly and move the lever through the various selector positions
  • Gear lever in position "P"
  • Engine running, At idle
  • The oil temperature 60°C (+ 8°; - 2°)

Remove the oil level plug ( 2).

Note: Distance of 'X' for the EW10 Engine is 48mm (which yours is)
Take note of the following conditions:
Stream of oil then reducing to a sequence of drips
Refit the oil level plug (3)(equipped with a new seal)Tighten to 3,3 ± 0,5 daN.m.

Sequence of drips or nothing
  • Refit the oil level plug (2).
  • Stop the engine.
  • Add 0,5 additional litres of oil in the gearbox.
  • Repeat the top-up procedure.
N.B.: The level of oil is correct when the stream of oil becomes drop by drop.
    Refit the oil level plug ( 2)(equipped with a new seal)Tighten to 3,3 ± 0,5 daN.m.
Check the oil level(continued)
Refit the filler plug (3)(equipped with a new seal)Tighten to 2,4 daN.m.
Too high a fluid level can cause:
  • Overheating of the fluid
  • Fluid leaks
Too low a level causes destruction of the gearbox.

hello again.. I ended up with having my garage fix it. Rodovre AutoCentrum, Provensvej, Rodovre, Denmark did a fine job and is 100% familar with the process.

Why i didn't do it my self? Well first of all it was a lack of time issue, and the i got a load roarring sound, like if the exhaust pipe was touching the chassis, wich i wasn't. It was 2 broken "suspension" to the engine!!.

It was fixed and the gearbox got 750 ml of oil, and the old lady now runs smoothly noiseless like a limo, wheater it's cold or running at working temperature.

Thank you guys for all your help.

I probably get back, next time i run into uncharted teritory...

until then have a nice summer :-)
