Painting Gabby

Unread post by daviemck2006 »

It has started. Gabby getting her freshen up. I’m going to do it all myself. The first stage is rubbing down all the bits that are getting filler. The rear door on the passenger side has a crease the length of it but it is not getting filled. I’m pleased to announce no further welding needed. She is as sound as a pound.

Neither Alasdair, coach enamel with a roller the wet and dry it about 1800 grit or smaller grit then buff it. I've been part of doing that on coaches in the past and I should get a good enough finish and a thicker coat of paint. It's not going a standard xantia colour, and if I ether don't like it or make an arse of it, well it's only a 200 quid run around, although a loved one and not treated like a banger. The tiny hole you can see is the only iffy bit on the car, and it doesn't look like it was caused by rust, the filler on top of it was cŕacking, so I just got rid of it and did what the previous repaired did, filled it again. Rain has stopped play now but that's a couple of hours today, that's enough. Tomorrow hoping to smooth the filler and apply primer to that bits then comes the rubbing the whole car down. It's really not bad for the age of the car, just a couple minor scrapes on the back corner and 3 of the bumper corners.

Your dent now has a lump of filler in it Jim. It will never be perfect, but will be better. Mark, the 407 is sitting untouched and unloved at the back of the drive. Not yet had the inclination to put it to a garage, and a rather large house expense means I can't afford to, so sit it will have to do. I would consider selling it as it is but it would be worth very little as a non runner. I have asked a couple of local garages and they have no interest in trying to fix it. Garages here are a waste of time.

I don't know what you do about clear lacquer. Can colour be put over the top of it, or would the clear lacquer be removed to slightly further from the repair area, to give room to feather the edge of the paint and sand it down, then lacquer over the whole area?

About 1/2 the lacquer is gone from it with a little help from a power hose. I'm going to use an orbital sander and possibly remove all the lacquer. But I think that if the lacquer is sound then it wouldn't need removing, just a light rub down. But then I've only really done single panels with rattle cans before, but they have all came out ok

Depending on the 'result' davie you can come and rub down all of my lacquer on scraptiva. Been sitting as a non runner now for at least 2years and lacquer is almost non existent 😆

NO :rofl2: Not rubbing anything for anyone else, unless she is mid 30's, long blonde hair, blue eyes and an hour glass figure. Ànd the chances of me finding one of them is nil to negative! :bouncy: :bouncy:

On Gabby, all filler bits rubbed down, a couple of skins of more filler, roof, bonnet, bootlid, door pillars all rubbed down, first coat of primer applied to all the bits which were rubbed down to the metal. Don't think there will be any more progress until at least Monday, apart from maybe putting more primer onto the bare metal bits. It will get possibly 3 coats of primer before flatting ready for top coat.

I’m on the final rub down of the primer before I start colour. The worst bit of doing paintwork is rubbing down. Even using an orbital sander on the big enough bits was a chore for my knackered body. Should be ready for colour tomorrow I hope. Or maybe not, I’m going to do the sills and door shuts in stone chip before the colour goes on. I may leave the sills black, it shall fit in with my colour scheme, which is top secret apart from one person who knows lol
