Get a garage (or DIY) to apply loads of waterproof thick grease to the steering rack Pinion valve stem/shaft)

............which is a surprisingly easy job to do as you can access the bit in question from the drivers footwell. Only requires a couple of bolts to be undone and a bit of wriggling
As yours is an early C5 X7, it'll almost certainly have had the steering rack replaced by now, so you might have a modified one fitted already.... or possibly not.
