Ok, so you have the same system as me, the NG4 Navidrive 3D. The first thing to do is to check the firmware version you have. With system switched on, press the SETUP button briefly and scroll down to SYSTEM. Select this and it will tell you the Firmware version you have. Let me know what it says or take a screenshot.
A bit of background
It is possible that your hard drive is playing up and is starting to have problems reading some data. Now, I have known this error to be corrected by a firmware update - which will update the system partition and should re-write the data, avoiding any bad blocks. These hard drives are high quality automotive grade units that are designed to withstand extremes of temperature, shock and vibration as you would expect. However they do have an operational life like anything, but they are very difficult to get hold of now as they are of the old PATA interface type and are very expensive. Solid State Drives (SSDs) has been tried as a replacement with an adapter and a modification, but with limited success, due to inherent differences in the way blocks of data are written to on an SSD, and the differences in the file system used on the NG4's operating system.

Other possible causes may be if you (or the previous owner if not you) used the 'Jukebox' function. The facility exists to 'rip' CDs to the internal hard drive of the system, or to copy music files to the drive from an external source like an SD card or via the USB port. If you do play music using the jukebox function, then the hard drive is obviously doing a lot more work - playing music, chopping and changing tracks, calculating the Navigation route data, handling the telephone calls, radar alerts and traffic info, voice synthesis / commands, etc., etc. The unit has an internal fan, but if the heating is on in the car, then it will have a harder job to try and cool the system. These units though are generally very reliable and problems are far rarer than some of the other systems.

Personally, I don't have any music files stored on the internal hard drive. I use a 32Gb SD card, that I have all my MP3 files stored on in folders. I insert the SD card and play everything from that - this results in less work for internal drive and will hopefully prolong its life.

On the positive side, let's see what firmware you have first of all, apply an update if applicable and see if that resolves the problem. If we can resolve that issue, I would get rid of any music stored internally (if present) and would suggest using the option I recommend for playing media files.

The best thing to do next is to try and get it to boot up from a new firmware image. At this stage, it will just stay locked in an endless loop as it can't load properly.
  • You'll need to get yourself a USB memory stick at least 1Gb in size.
  • If there are any files on it that you want to keep, copy them off, as we must format the drive.
  • Use your PC to format the USB stick using the FAT32 file system, not NTFS. (Insert USB into PC, then after it recognises it, a new drive letter will be assigned.
  • From 'My COMPUTER' right click on the USB drive letter and select 'FORMAT', then ensure the File system is set to FAT32 and ok it. Make sure you have selected the correct drive letter for the USB stick!
  • Download the following zipped file from my storage drive using your BROWSER, and note the location where it will save to (usually your downloads folder).
NG4 42C Firmware
  • When complete, right click the zip file (NG4 42C Firmware.ZIP) and chose 'EXTRACT ALL', then browse to the USB drive that you formatted earlier and press the 'EXTRACT' button. This will only take a few seconds as it's not a big file.
  • When complete, right click the USB drive letter from 'MY COMPUTER' and choose 'EJECT'. Then remove the drive.
  • To update the firmware, you must make sure that the engine is running.
  • Lift up the centre armrest and about half way down the inside front is the USB socket, that should have a protective cap on. Remove this and then insert the USB Drive.
  • Now just wait and within a few minutes, the system should detect the new firmware and ask if you want to apply the update. Select yes and follow the instructions. The system may ask you to remove the USB drive, then restart the system.
  • Fingers crossed, that should restore the system partition and upgrade the firmware to the latest version too!
Any problems, let me know.

That link is fine. Just click it and it should take you to my MEGA account. Then choose download via browser not MEGA. Your browser may be blocking it. I would suggest this one as it is the original from the discs I have, others may be tampered with out there.

Can you confirm the contents of the USB drive Alan, if the contents aren't exactly right it won't work. I'll tell you what is supposed to be on the drive in a while as away from my PC for the next 40 mins. Once I've verified them, we can try restarting the car with the USB already in the drive and see if that can kick in before the loop starts. After that we'll have to try a BSI reset.

OK, so the first picture is what is supposed to be in the route of the USB drive and no other files. Then inside the 'HEADUNIT' folder shown, there should be the contents of the second picture. Can you confirm is was formatted as FAT32 and that the contents are as shown Alan?

One last thing, if all is ok above and it won't reboot, with USB still in and engine running, press and hold in the EJECT button to the left of the DVD slot to see if it will reset
