Thanks Marc. The tool is for the pump assembly retaining ring which holds the whole thing into the tank. I improvised there with an old screwdriver and hammer! Not pretty but with care works ok! The images only show the whole pump, sender and basket assembly, item 6 on the parts pdf. The actual pump is mounted inside that basket. So it seems it wasn't intended to have the pump itself replaced, hence the issue with the tubes.
My situation is that I must be certain I can get the car mobile on the next trip, otherwise I face yet another expensive and time consuming journey. So I think I must replace the whole assembly. The logistics involved in obtaining the part and getting back over there tomorrow will be a challenge though!

No worries - I thought it better that you see this for yourself - and it has been getting more common for whole units / modules in general to be replaced now as opposed to internal components (you just have to look at the posts on the C5 steering racks)! Best of luck with it - and don't forget that you'll need to prime it too once it's in!

Thanks. I don't think priming will be required, it's a constant loop feed and return, so the fuel just circulates to the injection pump and back. It might take a few seconds to purge but that should be it, hopefully!

It's just that that is what it says as a footnote I think right at the bottom - just looking for a procedure - but blank so far..

I looked at changing the pump on mine, but couldn't figure out how, so just changed the lot.

It should re-prime at the first key on, there's no need to refill the filter (unless you decide to change that too). Probably worth key on till pump stops, then off, then on again till pump stops, then crank it.

Would it be an option to use a cheap, standard in-line electrical pump between the existing pump and the motor? Or separate along side of the existing one?

Just so you can get the car home and fix it permanently there

Is that the tool to undo the big plastic locking ring?

I undid mine with a large blunt screwdriver and carefully tapping around the edge with the use of a hammer.

That would probably work but would introduce another problem, how to install it into the feed and return lines. They are moulded semi rigid tubes with quick release fittings on the ends.
If I had another car at my disposal I would just tinker with it until I'd fitted the pump alone but the Xantia is my only car. Looks like I can get a whole new unit delivered to me on Monday for £55, so that seems the best option in the circumstances. Then I just have to work out how to get over to the car!

So after a virtually FOUR HOUR journey by public transport to cover 32 miles, I finally sorted the fuel pump thing out! The complete replacement pump assembly arrived without issue from an ebay seller, it is a pattern unit but is identical although I suspect not as good quality as the OEM part. Installing it without the special tool that fits the plastic securing ring is a struggle as the pump assembly is spring loaded, so it wants to push out as you need to push down and thread the securing ring on! Took about a dozen attempts before the thread started without jumping off, during which time I exercised my profanity vocabulary with zeal!
Everything fitted though and very little diesel was spilt despite the tank being almost full, and it started within a few seconds.
I'll try to install the replacement pump I initially obtained, into the old pump basket. Will be useful as a spare for WHEN the pattern fails! I might even dismantle the faulty pump to determine what failed. I could, should even, do a youtube on it! I know I'd watch it if someone else did!

I wish I could of been a fly on the headlining while you were fitting it. I can just hear the words "effing thing" filling the air! The worst of it on reflection was probably the damned public transport 4 hours on that would be torture. I'm pleased you got it done and I bet you were feeling relieved driving back in it! =D>

I would watch a youtube video of a man swearing at a fuel pump too, its entertaining watching other peoples struggles with life, youtube itself is proof of that.
Or were you talking on a purely educational video? in which case ive got the wrong end of the stick completely.

At least you got it sorted ok in the end.

Yeah, 4 hours on public transport is not something I want to repeat, ever! I admit that the last time I used a bus or train was years ago but the convolution involved in the journey I made was beyond belief. EG, the train had to go into Birmingham, where I needed to change, onto a train that then went out of Birmingham past the stations I'd past 15 minutes ago! The cost is also extortionate! The whole journey was £12, in the car it would be about £4!! So cost and efficiency of public transport is appalling.
The relief of being able to drive back in the car was immense! I hadn't realised how much I take it for granted!
