URGENT HELP NEEDED PLEASE??!!

Unread post by HDI »

The Xantia needed a new tank fuel pump, which arrived today. I was on my way over to fit it and the old pump finally coughed it's last, and despite the usual taps to get it going again it wouldn't run for more than a few seconds, so I was stranded! Got the AA out thinking as I have the pump with me it would be a matter of minutes to sort it out. No, the tube that runs down the side of the puump basket didn't want to come out of it's hole at the bottom and AA man refused to use force incase he broke something! Same with the tube attached to the pump, he said it seemed too tight to remove without breaking it.
So, 5 hours later, I was recovered home and now need to get the pump fitted. The tubes appear to be semi rigid, what is the trick to removing them? Help!

Not familiar with this model of car, or the pump / tube arrangement but.., often a little boiling water poured onto a rag wrapped around the offending plastic or rubber tube (the rag holds the hot water there longer so that it can heat the tube up) can soften tubes enough to then ease it off. If the tubes are metal and screwed in, then the expansion of the screw when hot water is poured onto it can help tremendously to get things off. Of course as best you can try to avoid water contamination inside the tank or pipes. Hope it goes well, Pete

Hot water from the kettle poured over them should soften them enough. It's worked for me in the past on a C5 HDi Mk1

Thanks guys, I've had to bale out of it today, will be back to it at the weekend. I tried the hot water method as I didn't have a hot air gun at hand. It worked on the smaller tube that runs down the side of the basket but the pump tube didn't want to know! The pump also seems to be secured at it's base somehow, is that another issue? Reluctantly I'm at the point of getting a full assembly, pump, basket and sender but having already bought the pump I won't be a happy chicken!

When you look at the new pump does it look as though the tubes on that might make it difficult to go in? Inspection of the new pump might give an idea of what might be catching. Or even whether the old one has become difficult because something has become entangled or made the tubes bend somehow. Maybe a syphoning hose has bent the tubes at some time in the past?

When I took the pump out of the Xsara a few years ago I had difficulty getting it out as the hole in the tank and the hole in the bulkhead were misaligned slightly and I had to persuade it past with a large screwdriver.
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

HDI - If you want the fitting / removal guide and the Parts list for reference PM me with an email address so I can send you the PDFs through as I can't load them here. YES - There is a special tool to needed to remove the pump - but you'll have a better idea (hopefully looking at the diagrams) and you might be able to improvise.
PS - it should be the same for all the pumps on the Xantia for this model - but if you can include your VIN in the PM, I'll double check before sending.

Thanks guys. It's looking like I may have to go the complete pump/basket assembly then. My problem is that the car is now 40 miles from home and due to my location travel is difficult and expensive, so my next trip must resolve the problem. Just wish I'd known about the tube connections and that a tool was required to remove the pump, I would have gone full assembly replacement from the start. The tube on top of the pump is a push fit over a serrated tail. I know that a heat gun will expand it enough to remove, but needing a tool to remove the pump is the issue now.

HDI - Can you access the PDFs from where you are? Best to look at these first before making any decisions and to make sure I have understood what it is your trying to remove! I have them here ready (don't worry if you don;t have the VIN to hand - it should at least give you a pointer, but I need an email from you to send them. :)

I was thinking of that - but there's a fair few... all quiet on the western front from HDI... Not sure where he's at location wise, so I'll put the few up that I have already Alasdair and if he needs more he can post back.
