C5 2.0 HDI intermittent non-start?

Post by pabloalfa76 »

Hi All,

Citroen C5 2002 2.0 HDI.

My car will start and run perfectly, then every few days will crank but not fire up. It could take me 30-40 mins of on & off cranking until it starts.
When it does start, it does so effortlessly, with no smoke or coughing and spluttering.

This is as if the injectors are not switched on?

I've no lexia and so guessing at low fuel pressure.
I've done an injector leak off check and all levels are about the same amount. So assuming injectors are OK.

The in tank pump is working well.

The car drives very well with lots of power.

I have no warning lights on the dash, and it never goes into limp mode.

Has any one had a, Fuel Rail Pressure Switch causing problems?

hi Pablo, I had a similar issue with mine, for about 6 months I used easy start, once she was running it was fine! just starting.. I didn't know what else to do.. also she would cut out under heavy throttle!

I think I tried a handful of pressure regs.. this could certainly with the problem.. but once when I did a lexia diagnosis, I noticed one of the injectors correction was way different to the others.. I but the bullet and bought a second hand injector and fitted it easily.. the car still goes strong today, starts on the button.. and I cant tell you how nice it is now to sit in it on a winters morning and not have to feed explosives into the inlet pipe every day ;)

the moral is, get a diagnostic with a lexia and check some numbers..
John

bugger, just noticed you are in Forest Row.. I have lived there a few times and Sharpthorne..

only down the road now in Edenbridge..

Thanks, for the advice.

I guess I'm going to need to get it tested. I'm thinking of buying on off of ebay, so I can use it again in the future.

Is Lexia easy to use?

I am happy to pop over to show you how it works Pablo, possibly for a pint in chequers ;)

I cant say I am that experienced with what to do with any information, but we can certainly get a diagnosis done and report back on here..
its no bother

I agree though that you should get one sometime

What happened with me, I had about 10 PSA cars and kept being told to buy a lexia, I got one and the result now is that I have to keep buying PSA vehicles!

Hi John,

Are you offering to use your Lexia, or Shall I pick one up and then make contact with you again?
Either way I'm happy to drive up to you if it helps.

Cheers, Paul.

Well it's starting to get me down, so lets do tomorrow evening.
Pm me your address and we'll work out a time, I'm probably about from 3pm. Hard to be exact as I'm out on the road all day.

Cheers,

Lexias are hard to use, but CAN be a real PITA to initially setup and get up and running!!!

They are worth gold once working!

Hi Again,

Ok, I met tonight with jgra1, who has kindly plugged Lexia into the C5.
I'll post up some screen shots for you to look at and hopefully someone with Lexia-HDI knowledge can offer some advice.

Dont take messages AS ACTUAL issues.. in other words the harness resistance could be an error caused by something else!

Firstly, does the car go into limp mode IE: Revs limited to 2.5 - 3k MAX ??

Those injector readings are all over the place!! Can you get your hands onto another set? Id say they were a bit all over the place and possibly causing your starting issue...

The Turbo pressure reading, reading high, that could be a faulty Wastegate control Electro Valve not shutting off and allowing over boost. Id try another electrovalve first. They are behind the passenger strut top, under the rear plastic cover.

I agree Paul re injectors.. my c5 had one that was all over the place.. upon changing it the car never failed to start again and never cut out dangerously at speed under load! we noticed that Pauls 2 injectors (2 and 4) were way off the correction of the other 2 (1 and 3)

The car never goes into limp mode and has lots of smooth power through the rev range.

It does look like the injectors are a possible problem, do you think any of the injector readings are OK and can stay?

Paul (Pablo).. - 19 pages - don't even go there..

but excessive leak off, caused by a dodgy injector, caused my bad starting (and my high speed cut outs)
