Take a gander at this thread. The only fluid for a 4HP20 (and AL4) is Esso LT 71141. As you say, golden and smelling vaguely of cat's pee.

Absolutely. Only ever use the pukka Esso LT71141. Nothing else is suitable. The Esso stuff is made from essence of cat and this will be obvious when you smell it! It's a rich golden colour is known as liquid gold on account of the cost of it....
You can order it from various on-line sources such as Automatic Choice but it is only available in 20L or 205L drums. 20L costs about £130 (ouch)
You'll only manage a partial change as half the oil is trapped in the torque converter and will not drain. Reckon to drain about 4.5 litres. To ensure a full change, do at least three partial changes at shortish intervals.
There is a special procedure for refilling and checking the level, for which ideally you need a Lexia to measure the temperature.
Be careful not to overfill as it will leak out of the driveshaft seals.
Here is the official procedure for draining and checking level.
Citroen and Peugeot dealers sell the oil in 2L bottles under part number 9736.22.
It cheaper, bearing in mind the need for the partial changes, to get a 20L drum.

Hello this may be nonsense, but I found this "Update to note that Valvoline MERCON V is also a confirmed suitable ATF for ZF trannies. (manufacturer statement)
" On this website
http://www.taligentx.com/passat/maintenance/atfchange/
Its aparently olis that can be used instead of Esso Liquid Gold.

Reading the letter from the Technical Director of Valvoline please be aware that although it can be used as a replacement i.e. total changeover of transmission fluid, they do not recommend mixing with Esso LT71141. If this is the case, can the box and torque converter be totally drained without removal?

No, not a chancehirsty wrote:If this is the case, can the box and torque converter be totally drained without removal?
All this oil retention makes them very messy to dismantle and work upon.
To drain totally would mean a full strip, new filter, a rinse out and a new torque convertor.
Makes LT71141 look cheap!
